I remember Cecelia, both from the circumstances and also for the unusual spelling of her family name. The initial media hype indicated she was found wrapped in her mother's arms, but this wasn't so. The media link above is accurate. She did drop out of sight, as noted. It's good to hear she's doing reasonably well.
When I hear the phrase "Sole Survivor", though, I still think of George Gay.

NW 255 crashed 2 miles from my house when I was a junior in high school. I remember being outside on that evening and hearing the crash. An older friend of mine was one of the first paramedics on scene. I always remembered that event as I went through my flying career. Later I studied and taught it extensively when I became a CRM facilitator. A few years ago I received a file that contained a very extensive video recreation along with the tower tapes that were used by the plantiffs attorneys during the ensuing lawsuits. The graphics and product was pretty advanced for the 80's and included many actual photos I'd never seen in 20 years of studying accidents. A horrific accident. Today there's a memorial adjacent to the overpass where the aircraft came apart. Trees were planted to represent those lost in the aircraft and on the ground. It is a moving place to visit.

I remember that day too, I was a Metro Capt at Comair on days off. My best friend from HS was a 727 F/E at NWA. He was flying DTW to CVG for a L/O; we were going to meet up for a few "sodas". I was driving to his hotel when I heard about the crash and was worried until they said it was a MD-80. At the hotel he said they had taken off a few planes before the wreck and had heard the mess on the radio.

"Ensign George Gay is shot in the right hand and arm. But, when he is swimming in the water, he is favoring his left arm, and reaching for his flotation device with his right hand. Later, when he is in the water watching the attack, the wounds are gone."
Amazing what we remember and what we don't.
