Spirit bag fees for non-revs?

I about had a heart attack when I saw that Spirit charges $35 to bring a carry on a flight.

Does anybody know who works there if a non-rev (non employee) is charged all the standard bag fees? I'm assuming the answer is yes.

Thanks.

You should have a heart attack. You're lucky you are not a paying passenger who doesn't read the rules. Paying pax who read and know the rules fly confirmed and much cheaper than you think. As a Jumpseater or non-rev you're covered (since the captain/airline is accommodating you). Normally however, if you were a paying passenger, small carry-ons 16X14X12 are free. Regular carry-ons 22X18X10 and that can fit in the overhead bin are $45 gate purchase, $40 ticket counter purchase, and $30 online purchase.

Effective Nov 6th, regular carry-on fees become $100, $50, and $35, respectively.

All of this is available online Spirit Airlines - cheap tickets, cheap flights, discount airfare, cheap hotels, cheap car rentals, cheap travel

Thanks for the info!

If I buy an airline ticket on Spirit, can the Spirit agents wave the bag fees at check-in if I show my airline id (I know, stretching) or do I have to pay the bag fees like everyone else? I can't find any interline fare information on Spirit and I want to take my family. This is why I am considering buying tickets.

Don't count it; they get fired for stuff like that. While they certainly may- don't hold it against them for not. Spirit is not known for bending rules.

Well if I was a pilot on a full fare ticket who coughed up cash for a carry-on and suddenly the pilots went Tango Uniform while en-route because they both had the bad fish meal, I guess Spirit management would have to negotiate very quickly with me about my fee to land their airplane.

Everyone knows you're going to land it. Your own life is riding on the line.

Now if you land it in the US and are a hero.... versus in one of the completely sketchy countries they fly to and selling it to the highest bidder on the spot... now thats up to them.

Thanks. Going to buy bag fees prior to check-in. Might as well minimize the damage. Planning summer vacation. Spirit is only non-stop airline for this trip. Don't want to be stressed about getting on in a peak time. I just bought the ticket. I feel shame buying 3 airline tickets for my family as an airline pilot. I guess I'm still living in the past where non-revving was easy and an assumed benefit.

I buy them all the time; non-revving sucks and not worth the headache anymore. I go on vacation to relax.

Jumpseaters don't get charged. Don't be stupid

Yeah, this! ^^^ Non-rev benefits.....aren't. At least not much of a benefit any more. Stress free vacations start and end with a 'purchased' airline ticket......or by staying home! :)

Don't feel like a schmo for actually paying for a ride! For those of us crazy, er I mean lucky enough to get hitched, I did it on my wedding and honeymoon years and years ago.

Do you think I wanted to hear about that for the rest of my life? How we got bumped and how I ruined the biggest event of all time? Nah. I like my kitchen passes once in a while. You did the right thing.

While we (NK) don't charge anyone to jumpseat, take a look over on the Regional forum at the new United travel policy for non-revving United Express carriers...ouch! Paying to go to work- unbelievable.

So don't demean this guy for asking- there's some sleazy stuff going on out there anymore. Personally I'm proud of our jumpseater-friendly policy and culture here and only hope it continues...but never underestimate the greed and shortsightedness of airline executives...

Random question. Are all Spirit employees, whether FAs, gate agents, rampers, etc. allowed to check/carry-on bags for free when they non-rev? At Delta for example, employees non-revving are allowed to check 2 bags free.

And yes, Spirit is awesome to jumpseat on!

After giving my wife ample warning of the possible disaster, we non-revved to/from Rome for our honeymoon!

3 legs each way...we got on every flight (though we changed our route coming back home) and every flight arrived EARLY. Unbelievable.

WhiskyPilot 05-08-2013 09:12 AM

International flights tend to have lower load factors than domestic and are a little easier to non-rev on. The key is to have plenty of back-ups with zeds on foreign carriers.
