Alaska pilots, what are your scope protections?

Skywest Inc just finalized a deal for 100 MRJ90 aircraft, with options for 100 more. These aircraft are too large to be flown for UAL(assuming TA approval) or DAL even under a Codeshare agreement. I'm not sure about American Airlines.

But what about Alaska Airlines?

First the plane has'nt even flown yet... Second numbers change all the time this early in the "development" stage... They get into testing ect, the Max takeoff weight may drop or go up... Look at the 717. Depending on the waranty you want the max landing and Takeoff changes... Maybe SkyWest told them they have to come in at the majical 86,000 lbs or the contract is void... Im sure both partys have alot of this figured out.. The MRJ90 is no more then a CRJ900.... Plus i Doubt the "smart" Alaska group would add 100 RJ's, thats equal to Alaska's mainline fleet in numbers.....

From what I have been told Alaska's scope emulates the codeshare partner they provide feed for, essentially they do not have scope however that was to be addressed this contract. It is worth mentioning that Skywest is ordering MRJs, they have a west coast operation and the MRJ does not fit the scope profile for any major I am aware of. Alaska is supposedly selling their -700's.

It's going to get interesting, one cannot get cocky about gaining another's flying in this industry.

Ok then.. But SkyWest is way to conservative to order 100 airplane without having a home for them..(just look at the Delta Comair deal..put those 200's with AA....). Whats USair scope? Mesa's contract is up soon..

The Alaska Airlines name is scoped. Alaska Air Group is not. Thus why we have Alaska Skywest and Alaska Horizon. Effectively we have no scope.

When the -400s and -700s get replaced by new -800s and new Max aircraft there will be a gap between 76 seats in the DH8 and 156 seats in the -800. That's a big gap. What aircraft will fill that gap? The MRJ90? Who will fly them? Skywest? We are addressing scope in our negotiations but......

It looks like Horizon is gearing up to take over SE Alaska flying some time in the future. There is even talk of rebranding Alaska.

I foresee a future where Horizon takes over the Alaska flying/brand and Alaska is folded in to another airline for long haul domestic flying or is rebranded entirely.

All former SKYW pilots at AS are scared shaetless about this, but of course, most of the senior guys are saying "no...it's ok...Brad wouldn't do that to us...." Now, I like Brad, but nothing surprises me in the industry any longer.

Jet flying should be done by mainline pilots....period. Give them a pay rate for 76 seat jets and take that flying back.

This question was asked during FP and the director of fleet planning said it would be more efficient for AAG to run 76 seat q400s in frequency than a small jet ie 80-110 seats. The 737-700 was then stated as the least efficient plane on property.
