True that. Especially on short final over Watts. If you listen carefully, you can hear the sirens.:D

I got lazed there recently. Again, good times.

Interesting people are asking for the RNAV visual 13 into LGA, or 19 into DCA, apparently the thrill of an old school visual is too much for some.

Company requirements, I understand.

Or even better is coming from Cali and requesting the right base to 19. Turn over the stratosphere at 3500. Better chances to get this after 2200.

speaking of Las Wages, i went in there once and was told to fly directly towards one particular hotel. no i idea where it was then or what it was now. see, the boss stayed at the MGM or Bellagio and we stayed out in Henderson, that's all i knew.

we actually went a lot, but never stayed in a casino. which was odd considering new years day the boss could make a call and get rooms for 14 people without a reservation, seems like getting sixteen wasn't that big of a deal especially if they were comped anyways.

oh well. the fine folks at signature could give us a ride to enterprise to get our green Chevy van that smelled like cat urine. :D

I know how you feel, I was told to go to the Stratosphere for 19L coming in from the east--the whole place is just maze of lights. We figured it out, off to the Mandalay Bay!

Downtown MKC in the 880....Whoa Nelly.....

tomgoodman 12-29-2012 07:33 PM

Old story: some pilot complained to LGA tower that clearance he received for a visual to 13 was too tight for a safe approach. Tower replied: "Most people fly up the other river."

sinkrate3278 12-29-2012 07:33 PM

Visual rwy 11 into Aruba (TNCA) !! If you're lucky, you'll get to fly over a cruise ship on short final :)

ForeverFO 12-30-2012 06:33 AM

Any night arrival into Panama with clear weather... which isn't often.

Flying Southbound from the USA, you can easily see the immense number of ships (on both sides of the canal) waiting for their number to be called for the passage. And the string of lights, both ship and shore, that define the canal itself.

So it's a view thing. The Panama airport itself is nothing special, with the exception of millions of COPA aircraft, and an insidious control system that favors them over anyone else. The number of times we've waited 30 to 45 minutes just to taxi to park ("got to get the COPAs pushed back") - too many to count.

The view flying into both Managua and Liberia CR is spectacular; volcanoes, rugged Pacific shoreline, etc.

I guess I'm more of a "view" guy than a stick and rudder guy when it comes to fun approaches. :D

i would've like to have flown ATRs out of EWR and done the VFR departures up the river or out over LGA.

Snatch 12-30-2012 08:26 AM

Flying to Eureka Murray (EKA) when weather was IFR. Typically ceilings would be about 200. There is a VOR approach but it was unusable because EKA had no weather reporting.

There is an ILS approach into Arcata (ACV). Before commencing the approach inform Seattle of your intention to conclude the approach with a Special VFR out of Class E to the south. So you break out at minimums, level at 200ft over the runway extended centerline till you cross the coast. Then fly south. Occasionally visibility will be in the 2-3 mile range. As the bay appears on the left start turning east and aim for a row of trees. Airport is either right or left of trees. If things get hairy, fly west and climb like hell.

Then you'd really like going into DOM in the ATR. That's a fun approach.

South Lake Tahoe has a beautiful approach. It's probably my favorite over the years.

Big +1 on EYW. Channel approach to 27 at night. Gotta keep the base tight to avoid the NAS, and still get stabilized on final with a short runway. Even more fun with heavy north winds. Always need a trip to Duval Street after that one. Don't even want to think about trying it in a jet...

Gigitygoo 12-31-2012 05:31 PM

I know it's not an approach but the Obstacle DP departure from Rwy 3 at SMO when LAX is landing west is fun

+1 for VOR 13L at JFK with a new FO and watch him age right in front of your eyes

galaxy flyer 12-31-2012 06:56 PM

The approach to NAS North Island via one of the ILSs to Lindbergh (KSAN) can be interesting. Pylon turn on the SAN terminal to a one mile final at max landing weight in C-5.

Any approach in Africa during IMC. (Self directed approaches are fun!)

Meigs Field (before that a-hole destroyed it). Especially at night, coming in from the East, over the water.

ILS28 at KORD, on a clear night. The view from the left seat has always been my favorite.

Kabul, Khandahar, Bastion. At night. Lights out until about 50'. TCAS alerts from all the UAV's and other friendlies all the way in. Sometimes, fireworks.

Pretty much any airport in the CIS. Like Africa, but in meters and with heavy Russian accent comrade.

MIA ILS09 dodging thunderstorms and Eagle bug smashers.

I'll piggy back on the Afghanistan approaches, especially going into Bastian and Salerno.

Ever been to Manas (Bishkek)? Dropped into there one night, thankfully during VMC, when the controller forgot we were at 8000 feet and 10 miles from the field when a squeaky, broken English, female controller states, "ReachXX, let us know when established on Localizer." We didn't get vectors or anything. We requested a 360 to get down and established and on short final, my copilot...who was also my boss, states,"Hey sweetheart, can you put your dad on the radios?". We all laughed while there was no response from her.

The Russian chick who worked the baseops there was smoking' as well!

gringo 01-01-2013 12:56 PM

Haven't been to Bishkek (yet), but it does remind me of Iquique, northern Chile.

80 miles north of the airport, FL280, we got "Challenge Cargo cleared for ILS 18"

No further communication from "control" until on 3 mile final, when we were instructed to contact tower.

Good times.

Going into Chile, huh? Yikes!

Telluride was always fun on a clear day when they let you drop in over the mountain rather than coming up the canyon...
Also for us lucky few that got to land in Princeville, Kauai... That is a rush in a jet...

PolishPilot 01-02-2013 06:17 PM

Rwy 15 departure at DCA with a left turn up the Anacostia river is a cool one

frmrdashtrash 01-03-2013 06:21 AM

ASE was already mentioned but I'll second it. EGE is also nice when it's VMC. Hailey, ID is pretty as well. SMO in a jet is.. interesting with the short runway.

The most attention getting one for me might have been Taos, NM. It's 5800x75 runway at 7800 msl. First time in there in a Citation X got my attention rapidly with a 120 kt ref, nearly 80 degree day putting our ground speed at touchdown somewhere between stupid and max tire groundspeed. Getting out was equally fun. 5000 lb gas and 2 pax put us at max weight to meet the climb gradient.

Sink r8 01-03-2013 06:32 AM

BOS Visual 27, Circle 33R. No creeping Left of the 27 centerline for 33L traffic.

Or the BOS ILS 4R, Circle 15R.

Airhoss 01-03-2013 07:58 AM

Shooting the arc into Bogota Colombia and one of the coolest things I've ever seen was on a night approach into Guatemala City. The volcano Aura was acting up and there was a perfect orange line of lava flowing down it's side. It was like approaching the land of the lost.

SurferLucas 01-03-2013 08:31 PM

Bay or Husky Visual into Seattle at dusk or twilight in Pacific Northwest summer...sun setting behind the Olympic Mountains...it really doesn't get more peaceful

LAX approach to 25L-->almost always a "super" greaser!

Getting vectors around the Shuttle Landing Facility. Nice tour of space ex history with the VAB on final. Crazy long runway.

The Opera House and Bridge flyover going into Sydney. Landing in Sarajevo, Bosnia in the winter and seeing the big ass mountain at the departure end.

flynwmn 01-05-2013 07:18 AM

BTV dropping in over the mountain. Or the ILS 28 circle 33R to BWI.

Sliceback 01-05-2013 07:46 AM

LPB. Stupid fast groundspeed on rotation because of the elevation (13,000'+). 195 kts. :-0

Tire limit speeds? "Random exceedances don't matter"

Big Slick 01-05-2013 08:37 AM

Bagram Air Base, Afghanistan. Surrounded on all sides by f-ing huge mountains.

You come in over the mountains and the controllers always keep you high until the last possible second. Also, you normally cannot hear them because of all the frequency jamming in Kabul. All you can hear are loud screeching noises on the radio.

Prior to the final approach fix, you have to descend at 3,000 fpm and if you are not careful, you will end up at the final approach fix on the false high glideslope. (Happens almost everytime)

There is also severe icing, low ceilings, poor visibility, ice fog, ice on the runway, etc.

Last year, we had a plane slide off the runway and the crew could not emergency ground egress because there are still land mines in the grass between the runway and taxiway left over from the Russians.

And, oh yeah, people shoot at you too.

Nice place.
