Bottom of Delta or bottom of SWA

Well, specifically on the first part of what Columbia said is spot on. Delta had never furloughed until it furloughed. Kind of like Pan Am had never gone out of business until it did.
See if this sounds familiar.. 35 freaking years of consecutive profits and we've never furloughed!!! That's what Delta pilots could say in the early 80s.
I mean, Delta's employees loved the place so much they payroll deducted a 767.
Then they didn't make a profit. Then a decade later they furloughed.
It works until it breaks, it's a valid point looking at any company.

Another point to consider is: who actually wants to run an airline...as opposed to a "network"? DAL is shrinking by the choice of management while the RJ partners and Joint Venture partners do the flying that DAL is purposely letting go in order to shrink. DAL is aided in that effort by a national union that supports the strategy and a local union powerless to change it even if they wanted to.
SWA is stagnant due to its merger. SWA is not stagnant due to purposely letting non-SWA entities do flying that SWA could do. Why is that? It's because SWA's business model only allows for SWA employees to care for the SWA brand. Will it always be that way? Who knows. But it's definitely something to consider...if you're ever in a position to actually choose.

I am at DAL, and for me the culture is a fit. A ton of former squadron bros are at SWA and they're all great guys. Both companies have been able to choose who they hire and in my small field of view, both have done a very good job. I JS on SWA a fair amount and about 50% of the time the pilots wish they had a shot at long haul international...That doesn't mean they are unhappy, it's just not in their future. If I could choose again, I'd choose Heather Locklear, but someone is tired of her too.

Based on the apparent way the DAL-NWA merger went, the way SWA has shown the LUV to FL, the fact that an 18 year upgrade at SWA means this 45 year old will probably never see the left seat, and the array of aircraft and destination opportunities at Delta, means Delta is the only choice, IMO.

That right there is some funny stuff!
In 1985 I left flying night freight at a UPS contractor, and bypassed Fed Ex, to go to Delta because they paid the best, had the best retirement plan, and bases where I wanted to live, BOS and MIA. I didn't want to fly one little airplane domestically the rest of my life either.
Now, both Fed Ex and SWA pilots make more than a Delta 777 Capt. and I lost a boatload of retirment money as well. Oh, and Delta closed BOS and MIA years ago.
Nobody know's what's going to happen to either Delta or SWA in the next 10 years, what looks good today might not look too good in 10-20 years.
