The Shrinking Lav
Airplane bathrooms Get Smaller to Squeze in More Seats - The Middle Seat Terminal - WSJ
As a matter of policy, I do not visit the lav on flights 3 hours or less. I would hold it in before I risk being wedged inside one of them permanently. But, hey, 4 more seats in Coach. That's enough to bring tears to eyes of them bean counters. Anyway, I much prefer the Japanese style toilets of basically a hole in the ground. I can squat real good and prefer that to sitting. |

Edit: In today's edition of filters blocking my images... |
There will be a mock-up W/C at check-in,will be required to enter,if you fit,you will be issued an electronic Bif-Card. No fit.... no card. I have no idea how they will handle the F/A's.............

This is actually a Boeing thing, as they have switched to a new manufacturer for them. All airlines are getting these new lavs. Hopefully they don't come with lithium batteries.

Who knew it would take so long for a thread about small lavs to get a little dirty...?

Airplane lavs are perfect for what is the average human being. Unfortunately, the average human being isn't defined well in obese and overweight America. You'll have to look at Europeans and Asians.
|
They should use the same space as is required in residential and commercial buildings. Heck, even porta-potti's have more room than on planes.
It seems the Ejets have larger lav's and seats than both Boeing and the Bus. |

This reminds me of a story I heard a few years ago. On most of our 757's and all of our 767's, they have the vacume flush lavs. Well the story I was told by the F/O involved was, a rather large woman got STUCK on the bowl, when she flushed! She flushed twice! There was enough of her to overlap (reverse muffin top? see photo above) all the way around the seat, to create a pretty good seal, and he had to go in there and pry her legs apart, to break the suction and get her off the bowl! You can't make this stuff up, and you couldn't pay me enough to get in there and do it! |

The stuck on the lav is a legendary story that actually originated with the the DC-6, as proof positive, there was a hole drilled in the side of the bowl as a vacuum breaker. Really no ******.........

Oh, and fix the towel dispenser. Want one paper towel? Get about 50. How hard can it be?
I just transitioned to the 777. The forward lav just aft of the cockpit, on the -300 at least, is like a small studio apartment. There's a huge sink, a rack for soaps and lotions, and enough space to have a three-way in there if you wanted to. :D |
