How does it work at your carrier? Can you pick up trips on days off for 150-200% pay? Please state your company. I'll get things started

At jetblue we get 150% pay for any credit over 78hrs per month. If your monthly bid award was 72hrs, and you picked up an 8hr trip then you would get an additional 6hrs of 100% pay and 2hrs of 150% pay.

It's a good deal for management, and exploits the fact that most pilots will do just about anything for more money. Using your example, take an FO at JetBlue making $101/hour. He has a 72 hour line, and decides to pick up open time to 88 hours to chase the premium pay. His effective hourly rate for the 88 hours becomes $106.74, or about 5.7% more.

But the company got 22% more work out of him.

And the pilot got 27.7% more total pay....

SWA offers open time to be bid on in seniority order. The pilot has the option to bid on the open time at straight pay or premium (150%). If the trip does not have straight pay bidders it will be awarded as premium pay. Lots of other ways to score premium also. Re-routes that moves your show time earlier pays premium for the whole day. Reassignment that gets you in later than originally scheduled pays premium for the legs past original release. Junior assignment etc.

That is true, and really, I'm not trying to crap on JetBlue's (or anyone's) premium pay. I just want to point out that premium pay is a tool for the company to get more productivity out of the pilot group.

My company is no exception, and all the time I hear guys bragging about the fact that they're pulling down just as much money as the legacy pilots. What they don't say is that they flew 90 hours to do it. I point this out because while a pilot benefits from premium pay, the company benefits more by not having to staff as heavily. From a negotiating standpoint, I feel we should be moving away from this - not towards it.

At Republic there is no such thing. Straight hourly pay no matter where you pick it up. Only exception is if you pick up open time on a day off you get a 4 hr min day guarantee...if you pick that flyin up off the trade board, no such guarantee.

I don't entirely disagree with you. But flying less hours and forcing my company to hire more pilots doesn't exactly raise MY w2.

Yes it is a good deal for the company, and if you want more money, it is a good deal for pilots willing to work more.

The basic point of this was to gauge what the conditions are at other airlines. Our management is stating that we are so lucky at jetblue because we have a premium pay system, and makes the illusion that no other major carrier offers overtime pay. So I was just trying to gauge the truthiness of that statement.

At VX, we're 125% over 80 hrs.

Suppose you get awarded a 80 hr line. You pick up a 2 day trip worth 10 hrs. Your pay would be 92.5 hrs for the month, 80 original line, 10 new trip, and 2.5 incentive pay which in this case is 10 hrs * .25 = 2.5 hrs

If they get desperate with low reserves, theyll send an email for premium pay on a trip on whatever dates they publish. That premium goes above the guarantee. Premium is 125% and if I recall correctly you double dip above 80 hrs.
