With airlines relying increasingly on extended global routes, U.S. air-safety regulators have set an important precedent by allowing pilots to fly longer than normal shifts on certain nonstop trips.

This is on one of our 16+ hour flights, which is uncharted territory for every US scheduled airline. We don't have a provision for it in our contract, ALPA asked for 5 pilots. The company asked the FAA for a ruling, and then you get what we got.
Thats the short story as I know it. I am pretty disappointed about it myself and hopefully it can be addressed in the future.
After all the jetBlue bashing, I'd hate for DAL to be the one to start the slippery slope of single-pilot transcons!
