In Boon to Airlines, FAA Allows Longer Pilot Shifts on Some Flights
By Andy Pasztor

With airlines relying increasingly on extended global routes, U.S. air-safety regulators have set an important precedent by allowing pilots to fly longer than normal shifts on certain nonstop trips.

The Federal Aviation Administration took the first step late last month by permitting some Delta Air Lines Inc. pilots to be scheduled behind the controls for a total of more than the current eight-hour limit during a single workday.

It issued special operational rules covering Delta's daily flights between Mumbai, India, and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport that will allow the carrier to complete the trips without having to ...

This is on one of our 16+ hour flights, which is uncharted territory for every US scheduled airline. We don't have a provision for it in our contract, ALPA asked for 5 pilots. The company asked the FAA for a ruling, and then you get what we got.

Thats the short story as I know it. I am pretty disappointed about it myself and hopefully it can be addressed in the future.

After all the jetBlue bashing, I'd hate for DAL to be the one to start the slippery slope of single-pilot transcons!

What's next? Throw the FARs out the window and let airline management make the rules? This request and FAA ruling is B.S., plain and simple!
