iPad Mini or Regular

If you had your choice would you go w/ a mini or full size iPad? For flight deck, hotel, etc....

Thanks - Baja

Get the larger screen, it is far superior (retina display) for reading or watching movies/tv on the road. I recently purchased a refurbished IPAD 3 with retina display and it is outstanding. Also, the refurb was considerably cheaper. While it is heavier than the mini I think the experience is worth the extra weight.

Regular. It's not a kindle

I bought the mini last year, and I love it. I am a commuter, and the mini works great to watch movies/read books on the airplane, etc.

Have both as my company gave me a normal size one, how ever I have personally a mini and def better for commuting and watching while your in the middle seat somewhere ....

Mini hands down. Less weight, less bulkiness. No retina is not an issue due to its screen size. Great battery life.

iPad Mini or Regular

Any DAL guys w Content Locker on a mini have a comment? Or anyone use for Jepp?

Baja.

I think the retina display is necessary to read words more clearly.

That's not to say you can't read on a mini or older version of the Ipad, but if you compare the two you'll see the difference.

I have read aviation reviews that the retina display was not an issue because the mini uses the same screen and tech that the regular ipad uses. Therefore on the smaller screen the images look very similar and can not see a difference. The jepp paper charts are the same size as the mini that we are all use too anyway. If you really need the retina display, I believe it will be available on the mini this fall at some point. The only time I can see a regular Ipad worth it is if your doing a lot of studying on it and want a bigger screen, but other than that the mini uses the same hardware and very similar and approved by jepp.

I have both as well, a personal mini and company full size. I prefer to use the full size one, easier to read. But for my motorcycle travels the mini is easier to pack!

iPad Mini is for regional pilots, iPad Regular is for mainline pilots.

Au contraire, regular ipad for the heavy days, mini for the light days.

Easy answer! If your young, get the mini. If your old, get the full size!

Bump!

Any updates to opinions now that the mini comes with retina?

Lobaeux 03-09-2015 02:00 PM

I still prefer my standard iPad. The mini is great for reading books, but I also enjoy watching HBO, Showtime, Netflix, CNBC, etc.
Being able to keep up with my shows, FaceBook and doing my line bidding on my iPad is huge.
The iPad Mini would be great, IF I was just going to read books on it.
Either way, you really can't go wrong, unless you get one of those Microsoft or Samsung tablets.

I got to fly the Boeing 737 test bed simulator last month. It has a built in mount on the yoke for the iPad Mini. Fits great and is getting approval from Feds.

I like Maddogmax's answer.

I'm just at the point where I kinda sometimes when the light's not just right need reading glasses. I like the full-size iPad display.

The previous comments re: no retina display in the minis are out of date because you can now get a mini with retina.

I've considered the weight and size savings the mini would provide and decided I was being a whiner. Gotta remember that the iPad is replacing a monstrous 30+ pound flight case! Definitely splitting hairs in comparison!

I'd go with the regular one (the Air 2). If you really like the mini's footprint though, get the older 2. The 3 is around $100 more and is exactly the same except with that stupid touch ID button. Nothing else updated whatsoever is what the techies are saying about it. A rediculous price to pay IMO for a feature with minor perks.

Age? Over 40…go full sized. About to get an iPhone 6 for the same reason. They start making the font too small when you hit a certain age...

Go for the surface 2. It rules!

Mini ipad rocks. bought a zagg case with keyboard and an adapter so I can stream movies on the hotel tv.

Scooter432 03-10-2015 12:00 PM

just purchased an Ipad air with 32GB of ram at best buy last week on one of their promotions. Great deal. I love the air..doesn't feel nearly has hefty as my original ipad retina without losing the screen size that I love for watching movies on the road etc.
