Default NWA hiring extra Security

LATEST NEWS
The Minneapolis/St. Paul Business Journal - 12:32 PM CDT Monday

Report: NWA hires extra security

Northwest Airlines Corp. has hired security guards to watch mechanics at its Minneapolis-St. Paul and Detroit hubs, according to union leaders, the Detroit Free Press reported.

The Eagan-based carrier declined to comment.

Companies often hire security firms during labor disputes to monitor workers and prevent theft, sabotage and vandalism.

Members of the Aircraft Mechanics Fraternal Association have voted to authorize a strike, which could begin as soon as 11:01 p.m. on Aug. 19.

Northwest (Nasdaq: NWAC) has said it needs to reduce labor costs by at least $1.1 billion to avert bankruptcy. The airline has asked the mechanics union to accept job and pay cuts. The sides are still talking during the cooling-off period that must precede a strike.
