(Like someone posted, I have never done that type of flying so I'm not speaking from experience, just thinking out loud).

Like I said earlier, go to the place that will allow you to have a batter QOL outside of work, that's more important IMO

Some people love flying to Rome. It's probably the coolest city in the world. Much different than Des Moines, Grand Rapids, Tulsa, etc, etc.
But all the time? No. Switch to Paris. Or Rio. Or Hawaii. Or the Caribbean. Or switch to domestic. Or Europe in the summer and the Caribbean in the winter. Options are good.

Yeah, Joey obviously has never been to Europe! I think the most fun layovers I've had were when I was flying to Europe, I would always go directly to where the water was and get on a sailboat. I've raced sailboats on some of my layovers in Dublin, Zurich, Tel Aviv, Sydney and Dubai. Layovers are what you make of them, you can sit in your room like a fat F/A, or you can hit the streets and find some fun.

Just don't get caught!

Depending on company, fleet, domicile, and willingness to commute, etc

Options? If one is SEA UAL on the 777, not so much. If one was LAX AA on the 777 (at one time at least), not so much.......

Hahaha, I've been to Europe numerous times. It's just I would rather be there with family/friends. Like I said, I could see the allure and can't blame anyone for wanting to do that type of flying, I just don't think I'd like it. Maybe my thinking is swayed because I'm a new father, I like the idea of always being within a few hours of my 16 month old?

Yeah, but you'd have more time off at home if you were flying four 3 day International trips per month, than flying four 4-5 day domestic trips, that's why at every major, International trips go senior to (crappy) domestic trips. You cram more flying into less days away from home, because you're not wasting time, sitting on the ramp waiting to park or push back 4 times a day.

On an international trip, you push back once, fly for 8-15 hours, land. Spend 24 hours exploring, eating, drinking, sleeping, and then fly home. You'd have more days off at home with your kids if you were flying those type trips, and you'd have much more fun on your long layovers than any 9 hour domestic layover...anywhere. That's why it goes senior. That's why we have 25 year International F/O's.

I've raised 4 kids. The youngest is 17 today, but when they were small, I stayed on the right seat of the MD11, so I could fly 27 hour 3 day trips ATL-Narita. I was only gone 9 days per month, and I coached my son's basketball and baseball teams on the other 21 days off per month. I could have been a 767 Capt. then, commuting to reserve 19 days a month, but I chose to stay home with my kids over that.

Now that 3 of them are in college, and we've had our pay slashed 42%, and our retirement flushed down the toilet, I need to fly the boring long haul stuff to pay their bills!

And conversely, the junior WB FO could be getting those same trips. But all over weekends, meaning he could be missing 3 of his son's games.

But that SAME guy could slum it on the NB, have a more work intensive 4 on/3 off or even better a 3 on/4 off like SW has but be home EVERY weekend and catch EVERY one of his kids games. He's also NOT playing catchup on his first day off as badly from the int'l trip time zone changes. Especially if he's getting older.

It's all about the trade offs and personal preference.

Yup, life is about choices, and that brings it back to the OP question; would you rather be on the bottom of a 737 only, domestic only type airline, or the bottom of an airline that offers you a much broader choice of flying for the rest of your career?

Also very good points.

The junior guy on the 777 in LAX has these options in LAX -

737 CA
S80 CA
777 FO
75/76 I FO
75/76 D FO
737 FO
S80 CA

The junior LAX 777 FO lineholder can also hold -

75/76 I CA
75/76 D CA

Guys bid the LAX 777 FO slot, even with it's restrictions, after considering their other options. Four distinctly different jobs - 777 FO, 75/76 I, 75/76 D, 737/S80.

As my SW buddy said "I'm still on the 737. What are you doing?" Standard tongue in cheek comment. He's well paid, happy, but realizes, from a flying perspective, that he's facing ground hog day for 25,000-30,000 hrs. We have guys that thrive on that type of flying and others that run from it.

^ yeah but what are you 16?, lol. An airplane is an airplane. We get paid to go from city to city in it. SWA pilots get paid well doing just that. I would shy away from Southwest because of the stagnation not because they "only fly 737s". Granted I have only flown a bunch of GA, a SAAB, RJ and an Airbus but you pull back and it goes up,you push forward it goes down, lol. I dunno, maybe it's just me but flying is flying
