Southwest folks...what does MDW expect?
Quoted is the OP...can someone with more experience out of MDW answer this?
I would assume the heading assignment doesn't cancel the procedure off of 4L/R because it's a vector SID, but I couldn't get a concrete reference. I also assume if MDW wanted an actual 040 heading instead of the initial turn to 100 they would explicitly cancel the MIDWAY 9 clearance then issue the heading clearance.
Given the OP circumstances what does MDW expect, or would they even give that clearance?
Thanks!

MIDWAY 9 CHART
Im cornfused with the RW 4L DP at KMDW
clearance: KGRB airport mdway9 departure, fly heading 040 maintain 3000 expect 5000 after 10 departure 128.2 squawk 3333
question 1: tower clears you for t/o assigns heading040. They want you on 040 or right turn 100 south of the radial then turn 040? (i assume they want you away from KORD/Downtown
question 2: northbound departures??? What is a northbound departure??
Example-
clearance - KTPA mdway9 departure fly heading 180 cm 3000 expect 5000 10 after.........
Tower clears you to t/o and fly heading 180
I would complete the turn to 180 south of the radial
but......??
What if you were going to kapn:
cleared to KAPN mdway9 fly heading 050.............
tower clears you for t/o states fly heading 050
Do they want the turn to 100 south of the radial then the turn to 050?? If I was a northbound departure I think so but am I a northbound departure??
I guess my confusion lays with the fact Im used to a tower assigned heading taking precedence (cancelling the DP) as long as im ok with terrain clearance.
It appears that for 4L northbound (not sure exactly what northbound means) they may assign you a heading via clearance or tower but dont want you on it till making the right turn as described.
WHcih is confusing to me as I am used to tower assigned headings as taking precedence. For instance what if they really did want you on a 040 heading? how would I tell the difference?

Whether its a Northbound departure is based on your first fix in your clearance. For example RAYNR is a Northbound, EARND is not. Read the initial climb for the rwy you are using and do what it says. On 4L/R initial climb it specifically talks about Northbound departures. All the other rwys apply to all departure fixes. ATC expects you to perform the SID if it was in your clearance, unless they "cancel the SID" on takeoff or say something like "after departure immediate turn to this heading". If in doubt verify it with clearance delivery. Hope this helps.

call clearance and tell them its your first time at the airport and you want to clairfy the departure.
Ive been in and out of MDW a ton but that was ten years ago, so the other week when I was there I too was confused on the 4 departure and asked them for guidance. Controller was real cool about it.

I doubt they would assign a 040 heading off of 4L/R. Most likely they assumed you'd be departing 13C in that case. Clarify with tower on departure.
Northbound departures are defined right on the SID as initial course 360 to 080.
They may expect you to fly the SID but an assigned heading takes precedence over the procedure and if in doubt clarify. It's not really a SID anyway, it's a Radar Vectors procedure with expected assigned headings if no other heading is assigned. I always expect the tower to assign a heading on takeoff.
Again, if in doubt, clarify.
