There are web sites that help prep for these types of tests. Took the mmpi a while back and it was a pain. Know some people that got called by the shrink after. They did get hired just slowed the process down.
I think you need to tell them what they want to hear, but not be unrealistic. Also have to be consistent. It seems as though answering too well (being a completely flawless human) may raise flags for honesty.

I'm not sure if an HPI is designed the same as a MMPI. But I believe that an MMPI is able to determine such things, or what's referred to as "projecting".

Then there was the guy who, when asked by the shrink, "What do you feel is your biggest flaw?"

He answered, "I think my honesty is my biggest flaw."

The shrink said, "Honesty? I don't think honesty is a flaw!"

And the applicant said, "Well, I -honestly- don't give a fk what YOU think!"

If I had to interview pilots for 30 years I might be on a short string myself.

Well at least you get two chances....DL tells you (or at least used to) to F-off if you flunk the interview once.

No longer. 6 month wait, then try again for many of their interviewees. Others are indeed told "no more chances".

It is a PERSONALITY test.

You cannot Fail to have a personality, but I've seen a few who certainly tried!

The 'test' is to tell the tester what -type- of personality you have. Then they decide if that's the type they want to hire.

One company may want to hire only Type A, another might want Type B, some may want Type C, etc.
Have to disagree with you Timbo. I once had a commanding Officer who everyone said you could not have a personality conflict with because he didn't have a personality

Can't tell someones personality from a hor$hit psych test or some Delta psychologist. You tell someones personality by spending a day or two with a person and having a few cold ones.
