Good job United!

Flew on United internationally for the first time ever and was very pleasantly surprised. Professional crew, comfortable economy plus seat, decent meal/snack and IFE system. Thanks for the positive experience! :)

Was that the same airline that I flew on last year, HKG-ORD that sucked the Big One? Four abreast on the middle of T7 biz class, 44 years of seniority F/A that didn't serve squat, and miserably kate connection in ORD.

What kind of AC? Flew a United 747 from SFO to PEK just over a year ago and it was awful. The single big screen entertainment system stopped working 45 minutes into the flight and the only thing they could show was that cartoon about the snail that wanted to be a racer. It was shown on a continuous loop the rest of the flight. None of the audio programming worked. The row in front of me had the flight attendant call which kept going off every 30 seconds for the entire flight despite nobody sitting in the row. In my row the reading light buttons turned on the reading lights five rows in front of me. The cabin crew could never find out which button to press to get mine to work. In their magazine they were bragging that all the 747s would be upgraded by the end of 2013. This was in December 2013 and it must have been the very last one they upgraded.

LNL76 01-26-2015 03:48 AM

777, didn't see breadsticks or cognac. ;).

The only knock on them is they charge for liquor in economy when the foreign airlines don't.

We call those F/As Chinasaurs.

galaxy flyer 01-26-2015 06:29 AM

First time flyer,

No, corporate. No cognac or breadsticks, either. My F/O had the nerve to ask the biz class F/A how many years she had been with UAW. "44 years and I'm still in business class", she snarled. I snarled at him, "now you've done it, we won't see her again". We didn't.

Hasn't that been the norm for US carriers for over ten years now?

There are very good reasons why coach internationally don't get free drinks...

If US Airlines gave free drinks domestically, it would be a nightmare. This is basically cultural, as in Americans generally don't know when to say when if drinks are free.

Disagree. I've been around the British.

Haha. Because First Class passengers can metabolize the alcohol from their systems instantly, whereas coach passengers will all drink themselves into a frenzy and bring the plane down

Airlines don't give free alcoholic drinks in coach because they don't want to spend money on it. Plain and simple.

gringo 01-26-2015 11:19 AM

Airlines USED to give away free drinks on international legs to passengers in coach, but that's been over for at least a decade.

I remember when it happened; I flew down to Belize on Continental, free booze. A week later I returned, suddenly I had to pay. Apparently they changed policy that week.

In my previous life when I was deadheading all over the world in coach, I vaguely remember that American still provided free booze in back, but only on select flights. ORD-PVG I believe being one of them.

But I haven't rode in back now for a while, at least on that leg, so I don't know.

By and large, however, I'm pretty certain you gotta pay for booze in back on pretty much all domestic carriers these days...

Exactly! Be careful out there.

cal73 01-26-2015 11:29 AM

So how's the early out for f/as going? I had one on her last turn. She was pretty, sharp and seemed nice. She seemed very pleasant with the pax. She only had 20 years in. It figures that the good ones would leave.

I'd say its a little bit off both, lets be real, the people in coach want to fly cheap yet still expect to be treated like VIP's, imagine if drinks were free with thosd kinds of people who want to pay $50RT to Vegas and then give them free alcohol, wouldnt work out.... In most countries outside the USA, they dont offer free upgrades. You get what you pay for.

aupilot 01-26-2015 12:27 PM

Just took Delta to Germany and the alcohol was free in economy class. The real stuff, not just cheap beer and box wine.

And just exactly what is wrong with boxed wine?:D

And by the real stuff you mean real Budweiser? Hahaha

Tell me about it. I work at Spirit, where people pay $28 for a flight to Cleveland and complain the entire time that their beverage wasn't free.

Nothing. Boxed wine has come a long way recently.

Bota Box Malbec is as good as any $10-20 bottle you'd find at your local higher end Liquor store, like Binny's or Total Wine. At $20 a box, with the equivalent of four bottles in volume, it's a steal.

Trader Joe's also started offering boxed wine, for $11 a box. Surprisingly good; it's not that headache-inducing Two Buck Chuck repackaged in a box, which I found surprising. For the price, hard to beat!

Nothing like a little game of slap the bag with Franzia to remind you of college. Least they dont serve Keystone on flights. Mullets would come from all over if it was free.

I've DHD on United to HKG NRT BKK SIN SYD etc etc on 777s and 744s. When I had a choice I would pick them over Delta every time. Deltas business first is garbage and so is the service, but I would take any reputable Asian carrier over both of them.

You must have been in premium economy; I think it's only beer/wine in regular economy.

A flight attendant talking about flying on an airplane. How is this relevant to pilots? (This being "airlinepilotforums" and not "airlineflightattendantforums.")

There is always a risk/reward analysis to any decision. I'm sure you've come to yours thoughtfully.
