"The fighter jets, their sole purpose is to escort the plane and have eyes on the plane..." Yep! Only reason they're there.

Actually, I've often wondered what the point was. It was a bomb threat. Are they going to shoot it down if the bomb blows up?

In the old days the bomb threat might have only been a vehicle to gain control of the airplane. Now that they consider control of the plane a flying bomb - are they going to let it continue to some unknown destination for some unknown purpose?

There are few **good** answers to any scenario.

I want to know what the "credible" threat was. Specific tail number? For that you just look out the window.

I'm sure they can't say, but SURELY It was more than "I forgot where I left my bomb"

I'm afraid we might see some copycats if they don't nail this guy to the wall...but soon!!!

They probably could shoot down some of the larger pieces but not sure what good it would do unless the pieces we're falling over a populated area.

Hmm, maybe if the plane is hijacked and then starts heading toward your house, you might see the point of making that incredibly difficult decision to shoot down an airliner (in other words, shoot it down over an unpopulated area). The bomb threat may have been more than a simple call that there is a bomb on board...

I understand how difficult it would be to make the decision to shoot down a hijacked aircraft. That wasn't the question I meant to ask, if I did--my bad.

If some clown/terrorist tweets a bomb threat, I get that it has to be taken seriously. My question is, what is the point of fighter escort? In my mind the worst case is the bomb detonates.

It's for the reasons they don't figure out.

Agreed.

Why do you care?

Don't worry about it. It's done for a reason.

An interesting article detailing the number of recent Twitter threats that have been made against the airline recently (and why they deal with some of them as they do)

Twitter threats to planes require delicate decisions
