If and when you have to divert you don't want to wait till your about out of gas. You need to plan for problems going to the divert base....
i.e.... When one jet diverts, the rest tend to follow. It's the "herd" mentality. So, plan on knowing that you probably will not be the only guy beating feet for the alt. Plan on being the first to leave. Then your probably the first to get gas and head to the primary destination.
Being parked on a taxiway 'cause theres no room on the ramp when the fleet diverts is not fun...

Also, once the divert decision is made, don't change your mind!! When ATC says to hold on for a few minutes more and they'll get you in, don't believe them!!

Holding bingo fuel and time to hold is very simple.
Take Reserve fuel, Alternate fuel, and burn to go from the fix at which you are holding... then add a bit of a fudge factor (the CRJ sips gas so I usually add around 2-300 pounds). You have your divert fuel there. It really doesn't have to be complicated.
Holding time... fuel burn in the hold (day in day out in the CRJ it is around 2000 pounds per hour)... See how much fuel you have left before your divert fuel. That is your holding fuel. From that figure, you can figure out how many minutes in the hold you have. E.g. If you have 500 pounds of holding fuel, you have 15 minutes of circles.

If you are figuring the bingo fuel from the hold to the divert/alternate, 'alternate fuel' is not needed.
