Did you read the article? The FAA...
discarded 3000 qualified college graduates with degrees in air traffic control despite their following FAA procedure and obtaining FAA accredited degrees.
Oh, and before someone attacks the news source (which is the 1st thing some do), lemme remind that WHISTLE-BLOWERS HAVE RECORDED EVIDENCE OF FAA-SPONSORED CHEATING.
Thanks.

Yeah, Obama and Eric Holder spend their time sorting through resumes for Air Traffic Controllers. Good point. Thanks for adding valuable information to the conversation.
There are about a dozen schools that have ATC programs. ERAU and UND are the largest, I believe. It was supposed to be a direct program right into the FAA training in Oklahoma City. Why on earth the FAA would not take all of these ATC grads and hire from the streets is beyond belief. I have friends that did the ATC program in college and they said it was virtually identical training to what the FAA provides for new hire controllers.

I have not applied to be a controller myself, but from speaking to people, it sounds like things changed dramatically very recently. The stories I was told were basically applicants got eliminated after taking a "get to know you" type biographical questionnaire-they didnt even get to move on to taking a cog test, knowledge test, or math test. And these were grads of ATC prep programs. Sounds like some good people were pretty devastated. Because of those cases I've heard of, I've been wondering what the hell was going on with hiring ATC people.
I fully understand my post is more hearsay than a strong, first hand account, but it does seems to match up with the posted story. But yeah, it seems something fishy IS going on, and qualified people are being turned away.
P.S an ATC instructor I know basically cited the same thing. He was pretty fired up.

And checking the proper blocks on an application.
When I worked for a large oilfield company, I had to justify why I didn't hire any women who applied. Sad but true.
I hired every single QUALIFIED woman who applied. Some lasted, some didn't.
But when you have no degree and are applying for a job that has "BS or higher degree in Geology, Engineering or the Physical Sciences" and you have an Associates in Business, I'm going to not hire you, then call HR for wasting my time.
But yes, diversity is a mission in big business. Because the government said it is. And woe to the hiring manager who can't back up his decision to not hire a woman or minority with quantifiable facts.
Now I just fly the plane, and the hiring is someone else's nightmare, until they make it mine. Which has rarely happened when they hire someone who has the logbook but not the skills to succeed.

It might be once you get past the HR folks - but it doesn't matter who you know if you can't mark enough of the correct blocks to make it past the HR screening. At least this was my experience with gov't hiring practices.
