Sick Leave Verification at other airlines.

Just curious.

How many hours of sick leave are accrued at the various other major airlines? Annually? Monthly? Are they bankable?

At the Widget, there is concern that the use of sick leave far out weighs that at the other airlines. This would and is a hard fact to confirm.

Presently, sick occurrences need to be verified as follows:

The contract requires a pilot to verify an illness if the pilot has used more than 100 hours of unverified sick leave in a sick leave year or when the pilot has been out on a sick occurrence for 15 or more days.

Furthermore, this is the kicker, if circumstances exist that give a good faith basis for inquiry, a Chief Pilot may ask a sick pilot to describe their illness in general terms. After such discussion, the Chief Pilot may request verification of the illness via a doctor’s certificate or other proof of illness.

Sick verification must have:

1. Employee’s name
2. Doctor’s name, specialty, phone number and address
3. General nature of the illness
4. Treatment date/s
5. Doctor’s signature

Here lies the issue. There are issues with number 3. Seems to be there is push back on not including enough information when it comes to the nature of illness. Some doctors are putting just the minimal amount of information due to HIPAA laws and it's is later deemed not enough explanation.

Curious if any other airlines have the same provisions for using and verifying sick leave and any issues with the said verifications?

Out of curiosity, what recourse does the Chief Pilot have if they deem not enough explanation is given? Seems like an extremely slippery slope....

It is an extremely slippery slope until a call is placed to one of these firms:

Yeah, unfortunately a few USAFA graduates got through the process and are mucking it up for everybody else. Don't get me started on the guys from SEC schools.

:D

btw, if management requests any type of verification, they have to pay for the Dr visit. TheManager also has a contract comparison that he could use to answer his question.;)

You accurately describe the PWA up to this point. Contractually, verification of sickness may be either a doctor's certificate (at Company option) or other proof of illness. A doctor's certificate is "written verification from a doctor indicating in general terms the nature of a pilot's sickness." (14 A. 2.)

Nothing more and nothing less.

And how exactly is using your contractually agreed to sick leave considered defrauding the company? What's next having to explain how you spent your vacation time and off days subject to verification by the CPO...

Ain't that the truth. I was actually diagnosed with analgloucoma last year after scrubbing one too many toilets.
