Default CAL numbers

So as I understand there are 3 hiring pools. One for non-recommended people. One for internally recommended people and one for internally recomemded + a walk in recommendation. Can anybody shed some light on what the numbers are in each pool.In addition do they only call people from recommended + walk in pool?

Thank you

You are correct. My understanding based on what I was told by a friend is that they are only calling for interview those who were internally recommended plus had a walk in recommendation. I am not one of the lucky ones, I am on the second pile, I've been waiting since April last year when they opened the window. Good Luck!

Default Internal Rec.

Question about internal recommendations:

One of my very first instructors is a 777 FO at CAL. We haven't flown with each other, or even physically seen each other, in a few years. But we do actively stay in touch. The question: to what extent does the actual nature of your relationship with the person recommending you come into play? Is it ok if his attestiment to my flying abilities is based on GA flying? He says he would love to recommend me to CAL someday and I'd imagine he wouldn't mind walking my package into Houston, either.

Thanks

I've done recommendations for people for CAL. The form asked if I've flown with the person. I think they want and like that. I don't think it matters when or where, but what do I know?

The insiders tell me that there are in fact four categories, with all four requiring at least hiring mins. They refer to candidates being in the ocean, lake, well or the bucket. The ocean has lots of folks floating around not going anywhere anytime soon. The lake obviously has less but better qualified folks, but the well or bucket are where you want to be. I don't know exactly the requirements to get from one to the other but an internal recommendation is required to get to the well. An impressive resume with two or three QUALITY internal recommendations, and perhaps one of your sponsors having a chat with a chief pilot should get you in the bucket. There is no such thing as walking your papers in, as many speak of here. All applicants go through airapps and any "walking stuff in" is nothing more than a friend having a chat with his or her chief pilot about your progress. Hope that helps some!

Folks thanks for the replies. I have a few internal rec's with some that I have actually flown with under 121. I guess next step is the "chat" and a lot of patience.

Hmm. I once played in a church instrumental ensemble with one of the EWR CP's. But we never flew together, and haven't seen each other in a while. Guess I'm going to need to make more friends at CAL.

I know this thread is dead for a while, but it's great info up top about the rec...

I have 4 recs so far from guys i've flown with, but it'll take them a while before they can walk my stuff into CP. Do i stand a chance with just internal rec at all?? I agree it's all about who you know at CAL.

Let me clarify this a little bit. There are a few different pools. One you don't care about because you wouldn't be qualified. The others are similar in that you are qualified, and qualified with internal recs. You have to physically go into the CPO and sit down with him with your candidates info on the computer. He is also going to take into consideration how many times you have missed a trip, called in sick, etc. The CPO can them select the applicant. Now you are in the selected bucket. That is it. From there you have to be pulled out of that pool by someone at pilot recruitment. There is nothing that the CPO can do from there. It took me a year of talking with 2 different CP's and the fleet manager to get one bud an interview. I got another person an interview after about 2 months. (better qualified) I just rec'd 2 more the other day.

Good luck....
