My AME is a sharp guy. He's also known an excellent resourse for those who require a special-issuance.
I trust in him 100 percent when he tells me safey would not be compromised, at any level, with the elimination of the third-class medical.
I suspect he's not alone. Would be nice to see the AME organization put out a release to the contrary of ALPA's position.
It would also be nice if ALPA would poll the membership before deciding to speak for everyone.....

Really guys? REALLY? Are we at the point that we as professionals would support the EAA and AOPA position and be ok sharing the airways with those that don't talk to an AME occasionally and get a basic medical evaluation?
REALLY?
Considering the average participation rate within ALPA is about 5% (outside of contractual ratifications) how would a poll help here? Also ALPA is here to make us all safer, not to placate and back us in a corner with the EAA and AOPA.
ALPA knows what they are doing here. Look at the initial proposal a few years ago the FAA wanted with the sleep apnea policy. Look what was eventually put in place. The new policy isn't in place because of the EAA and AOPA...

Maybe things like this (ALPA speaking out on something that really has nothing to do with the AIR LINE PILOTS Association) is one reason why there is a 5% participation rate...

You are missing the point that ALPA is one of (if not THE) the largest non-government safety organization in the world in relation to aviation. Pilots not having proper medical standards is a safety issue so ALPA will comment on it.

When I was a CFI I had one student pilot that was kind of scary to fly with because of his oddball personality. Instead of pawning him off I sent him for his medical (no way in hell I would have signed him off to solo anyway). He didn't get his medical because as it turns out he was a schizophrenic. Sure he could have easily dodged the question on the application but in this case the third class medical stopped him for learning to fly.

I still don't see why an airline pilot's union cares about Class 3 Medicals.

You cant have the same bogeyman over and over again. With time you get used to that bogeyman and then it's not scary. Yesterday it was ME3 carriers, today's bogeyman is AOPA's 3rd class med reform. Tomorrows bogeyman will soon be announced.

Other supporters: Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association, the Experimental Aircraft Association, the Flying Dentists Association, the Flying Physicians Association, the General Aviation Manufacturers Association, the Helicopter Association International, the National Agricultural Aviation Association, the National Air Transportation Association, and the National Business Aviation Association
Write your reps, and run your opposition to this up the flag poll. ALPA may be surprised at the hornets nest they just stirred up within the membership.
