Going for a few days. I'll be jumpseating there can I get away with a crew visa? Or do I have to apply for a tourist visa? Anyone else been there outside of work? Thanks for the info.

Get a tourist visa.
We had a few guys operate in to Shenzen who had a long layover. They then went to Hong Kong on their off time. Leaving was no big deal, however getting back in to China crossing the border on their crew visa was not a good situation.

Always get the right docs and be conservative with china (or any totalitarian regime)...a few places might even charge you with espionage for trying to enter "illegally". And God help you if you happen to be a military reservist. The DoS would probably spring you eventually, but it could be a long however-many months. Those places are not like here where you "got rights" and border shenanigans amount to parking tickets.

As others have said, you will still need a tourist visa.
Someone once tired to tell me you can't have both a crew visa and a tourist visa in your passport. That is not true.
If you take the ferry across, you can pay with a credit card on the Hong Kong & Macau side but cash only on the Shenzen side. That is how it used to be, unless they finally upgraded.
