jfk commute
Didn't see anything when I searched so apologize if this has been covered. I am moving to the iad area and wonder if anyone on here commutes from there to jfk. My flight options seem to be 3 a day on Jet Blue or a miserable commute to dca and then lga and a car across town. Any experiences you could share would be appreciated, especially Jet Blue guys who may be doing this commute.

Can't help much but used to do the DC-LGA thing.
There are usually a bunch going to JFK on those lga flights. So people usually look for each other when they get to LGA. Qcab from LGA-JFK is $18. It's just hard to get in and out of JFK in general. |
There's also 3x/day Shuttle America E135 service as Delta Connection on IAD-JFK. If you do wind up having to schlep over to DCA, there are AA and DL flights right in to JFK.
Getting from IAD to DCA is a pain. The Metro Silver Line won't be finished until 2019 (so they say) and the option available is a bus that will take you to the Reston East Metro station for the Metro ride to DCA. Driving is often quite a very miserable experience. At the other end, in a pinch, you can catch a van for $13 from LGA to JFK. So, there are a few options. How viable they are, I will leave for others to say. Hope this helps. |
My guess is you'll be on reserve? Crashpad in Kew Gardens? If so, from LGA to Kew Gardens is $2.75 by bus (Q70) to train (E-train). (Free transfer from bus to train)
$13 to go direct on NYCAirporter from LGA-JFK or split a cab with someone. |
I worked at Chautauqua/Shuttle based at JFK. The IAD-JFK flights were almost always full with a jump seater. Good luck!
|
I imagine the commute from both CHO and RIC to JFK are equally or more difficult than from IAD... Looking at moving to CHO and commuting to JFK for the ER. Any insight?
Thanks! |

It's almost always a 190 as an FYI. 2 jumpseats total, one flightdeck and one FA. |
I live 20 miles west of IAD and commuted from both for 30 years. I think you will find that you will end up going to DCA more often than IAD
|
I tried this IAD JFK commute for a short while back when B6 had 5 a day on the 190s as well as a slew of DL RJs. Lots of guys doing this one! While I was always treated well by the blue crew (thanks again!) I gave up, just too much stress.
It was easier for me to commute transcon to SFO from IAD than to do the 45 minute JFK run. Looks easy, but it's a tough one, good luck! |
Seems to me from LGA you can take the Q61 bus to Roosevelt Station, subway to Jamica Station, A train to JFK... Total about 8 bucks if you buy the multiple passs (my info is 3 yrs old so please verify the bus #)

Lugging your roll-aboard + kit bag(maybe) + lunch bag(maybe) gets to be a real drag. You will find that nearly everyone that is forced to do it will take the Q runner, Airporter, or a cab. |

Going between LGA and JFK via public transport loses its appeal after about a week!

Uggghhh and I live RIGHT between JFK and LGA and have to commute halfway across the country now that my regional closed 4 bases in the last 5 years. Used to be able to roll out of bed and be in either crewroom within an hour.
Anyone wanna trade?!? (Sorry yesterday was my first day commuting in almost 11 years) |
I did the JFK commute for a couple of years. It was a lot easier for me to go to LGA though, but I was on reserve and had a decent crashpad in Kew Gardens. So I would just spend the night there. I usually took the Q-Runner, which was $11 at the time between LGA and JFK with a stop in Kew Gardens. Public transit is a pain.

5a bus runs every 30-40min from IAD to rosslyn and l'enfant plaza for a quick metro ride to DCA...bus is $7. Takes me 60-90 minutes from one to the other.

Thanks all. Not looking forward to it but looks like I will be going into dca a lot.
|
I've been doing the JFK/IAD commute for over 2 years. Only use jetBlue, 3 flights a day (2 on Saturdays), ALL on the 190. I've only been screwed 3 or 4 times and just rented a car one way for about $100. Rest assured, the jetBlue pilots do everything in their power to get EVERYONE on.

I use the airporter between JFK-LGA and vice versa. If you buy a book of 20 coupons it works out to $9 a ride (instead of $14 per one time). Often very late leaving JFK in morning. They advertise terminal 5 at 5am on the first run; however, it's more like 5:20. Plus they make multiple stops. If you have time it's a cheap, clean, and reasonably pleasant option.
