Getting anywhere in Seattle means you have to drive around or over Lake Washington, it is a huge obstacle, which while beautiful, is a major PITA when driving.

Reasonable, actually. The state gets most of its revenue from B&O and sales taxes.

This problem can by avoided by living in the South Sound area. (i.e. Maple Valley, Kent, Federal Way) Although in Gig Harbor you still have to deal with the Narrows bridge and that horrendous traffic where SR-16 and I-5 merge.

Overall, I enjoy living here a lot. The flexibility of this job allows you to mitigate some of the "cons" (i.e. rush hour traffic and the grey of winter) to an extent.

Default Seattle Domicile pros/cons

No one mentioned Tacoma. I haven't lived there in 20 years but I remember it being nice. Certainly a shorter drive to seatac than Olympia.

Steilacoom was a nice little town when I was growing up there.

And the second bridge hasn't helped the narrows bridge issue?

I like Tacoma, but couldnt find great schools when I looked. And while less expensive than Seattle, far from cheap.

Think the bridge is better, but was a toll last time I looked. And the 16 I5 merge is still tough.

Tacoma has some nice neighborhoods, especially NW of town along Ruston Way towards Point Defiance. Seattle is undergoing some massively unsustainable growth. Traffic is getting brutal and housing prices/rent are rising well above wage growth. I used to live in West Seattle which would be a great place to be if you can afford it (median sale price of a house is around 450k). I would avoid a commute that involves a bridge or ferry (definitely avoid a ferry commute by car).

As Ed McMahon used to say, "Yes! You are correct, sir." I will, and thanks for the input

Wow, some really great points to ponder here. Thanks all!

MikeF16, sounds like we are cut from the same cloth. No way I could stuff my family in 1500sf these days! Had to laugh at your description of how you deal with traffic. Sometimes I really have the urge to yell "earmuffs" when I've got the kids in the car.

SVA402, good opening. We do love the outdoors, and we are looking for somewhere with 4 true seasons (snow required).

Pete, yes, hipsters bug me. NPR too! Volvos...whatever. No preference.

Please keep the input coming. Some very good points thus far. I sure there's more to consider. Thanks in advance.
