Background Info Hacked
Is anyone else getting the Office of Personnel Management letter stating that their data was hacked? I guess the Criminal Background Investigations data was part of some Federal data "malicious cyber intrusion." Our government at work. OFG

I got a letter like that also. It looks kind of fishy to me. Why would they be offering credit monitoring for my dependent children? I don't remember filling out any applications from the gov't. My scam radar is reading high on this one.
|
I obviously haven't seen your actual letters, but millions of people that have worked for the gov't and had some sort of background check done, i.e. secret or top secret clearance, probably was impacted.
If you are current military, contact your CoC for more information. Retired or ex-military contact the VA (I know they're not the best either). If you're in the civilian gov't or have been, try and contact your organization for more information. |
This was big news a few months ago. OPM was hacked and anyone who has ever worked for the DoD was impacted. Detailed personal data including all data on security clearance SF86 forms was taken.

My id has been stolen already. File a police report and freeze your credit. A police report will allow you to freeze for free.
Credit Freeze and Thaw Guide | Clark Howard forget credit monitoring...its a scam. They notify you after the crime happens. Credit freeze prevents accounts from opening in your name. Before you freeze, you might want to open an account with https://www.creditkarma.com/ before you freeze. |
Think it was 21.8 million that were compromised, the valid letter according to my Rep's office is that there will be 5 boxes with pin numbers at the top and an auto signature of Beth F Cobert. I took the letter to my US rep's office and they validated that it was a valid letter...it does look fishy.
According to my rep the letters are coming out piecemeal. |
Letters apparently did go out from OPM regarding this, so the letter received may not be a scam. Found this via a quick search: https://www.narfe.org/home/articles.cfm?ID=3835
It includes an OPM number one can call. |

You have to put your kids ssn on your SF86 |
It happened months ago and they're just now advising you?
|
Because a conference in Paris was a higher priority......
Got my letter a month ago; many friends got theirs months before, so I had hoped I escaped. At issue: almost every bit of info on you, friends, family, schools, and employment was on your SF86. So yeah, it could affect your kids. |

So yeah, it could affect your kids. I also received three other OPM letters for other folks that listed my mailing address on them but did not have their correct address (one was for my neighbor). Our wonderful Federal Govt chugging along in usual fashion. |
My concern is they are only offering 3 years credit monitoring......so after those 3 years? We screwed up, sorry about your luck?
|
Yeah, I thought that was crappy, too.
But maybe they realize our country will collapse in two years, so they are really giving you more than we need.... |

I got it as well, advising my fingerprints were also compromised. Gotta love that.
Not much technology for duplicating those now, but in the future? Say, maybe a little more than 3 years? What a joke. |
My wife got her's a few weeks ago (Just renewed her TS clearance) I got mine today. Her company's Security Department told her the letters are real, however, it appears someone has hacked the letters and are sending them out as e-mails asking to verify your personal info.
|
I don't want to sign up for the monitoring yet, I'm concerned it will eliminate my ability to join a class action lawsuit in the future. I can't see how such a suit could lose if just asking for lifetime monitoring.
|
I got the letter. I used to have a security clearance for a DC job. Also, my employer's health plan company data was hacked.
|
Please know the perps who steal identity data sit on it because they know when the breach is discovered, credit protection will be provided. They wait for 2-3 years and then exploit your information. The hits just keep coming with our govt.'s incompetence in securing sensitive data.
|
They should be offering lifetime protection for us and our families.
The irony is obscene. A TS clearance entrusting us with the gub'ment's most potentially-damaging secrets. But they can't be entrusted with ours. |
It wasn't a hack. It was complete incompetence. A contractor had full access, for a very long time, to the data and they just took it.
Since it involves your SF-86 it impacts everybody you listed; spouse, children, siblings, parents, etc. So when they say 21.8 million records, multiply that by a factor of 3-5 to fully understand the level of this breach. |
Just got my letter today? Nervous about signing up with the services. It's a third party. Is their data secure?
|
Can't wait to get home after being away for over 2 weeks to see if I got the letter.
|
Got my letter. Fornicating incompetence
