Global entry and TSA pre-check
 

Do they let you in the TSA pre-check line if you are not in uniform and just show an airline ID?

I'm getting back into 121 flying and wondering if in today's environment if it is worth getting into the Global entry system or if once I get an airline ID it is not really needed.

Global Entry has nothing to do with getting through security. It only helps expedite clearing customs. If you work for an airline that provides Known Crew member access, then typically won't have to deal with even going through regular security. For airports without KCM check points, you'll get ushered to the Pre-check line.

As far as attire, uniform is no longer needed for either KCM or regular TSA lines. However, if you go through regular security out of uniform, standard passenger requirements apply so you could have restricted items confiscated.

It seems to vary by airport, but majority do not let you through TSA pre check when not in uniform even with airline ID. I have gone through the line up to the final docs checker, and then they divert me to the regular lines normally if not in uniform. It still does save some time doing that though I think in most cases.

WhiskeyDelta, Global Entry automatically includes PreCheck which is why I assume the OP is asking the question.

I didn't know that so thanks. How would that help in any real way? If you are not in uniform, do you flash a Global Entry credential and airline ID to get into the Pre-check line?

Anyone can apply for Global Entry and then just use that to go thru PreCheck. It is not just for pilots so you don't have to show that ID then. Without it, even pilots not in uniform are supposed to go through normal security lines if no KCM available.

Once you are approved for global entry you are issued a "known traveler number". This number allows you access to TSA precheck when you include that number in your ticket purchase/ticket listing.
If not in uniform, unless you have a ticket (standby or otherwise) that indicates TSA precheck, at many of the airports I transit, you will not be allowed entry and will be sent to the normal line...even if you show your airline ID.

So if you want to JS and not be in uniform do you sign up for TSA pre-check and then just fill out a standby boarding pass so you can get through security quickly and then just go to the gate where you want to JS.

I have used my crew ID when KCM was closed (not in uniform) and was told no pre check, go thru regular line. Got all my liquids snatched too. Thanks DCA

In general, that's the best way. Sometimes if the terminal doesn't serve the company you have non rev access to, they tell you to use another checkpoint. JetBlue lets you list online and put your travel ID number so you can get PreCheck when JS. Haven't seen any other company do that.

Outside of KCM, the airline ID is pretty useless out of uniform, unless you get the very occasional nice guy.

This must be a PITA for commuters that travel out of large airports.

Sounds like the easy thing to do is to wear your uniform and do the quick-change in the bathroom unless you can do like stated above and print out a boarding pass with the KTN on it.

Maybe some day the TSA will realize that pilots are not a threat.
