Airbus vs MD 80

I am in a custody battle trying to move with my son
I'm needing opinions and facts that an Airbus is a career advancement even though pay is the same
I am a Captain with 10000 hrs
In the MD 80

jcountry 07-24-2016 05:08 PM

Well....

They sure ain't making no more MD-80s.

Submit cockpit photos of each. Should end any debate.

Could also point out that airbus is still in biz while mickey d....not so much.

Seriously...sorry for the situation.

Do you like airplanes that have large flight decks, tables to eat your lunch, foot rests, no annoying flight controls in the way?

I love the Airbus. Fifi acts up, but I come to expect it from Fifi...

I think he's looking for talking points to give to a judge on why he should be able to move.

Just print off some of those Chinese Airbus pay rates and show them that.

Am I missing something? Why is a 10k CA asking this? Take what works for you and son? The Bus only makes a good pilot average, so.. go with what really matters, which is your son. Career advancement is 10x better in the Bus, but I shouldn't have to be telling you this?

Might want to wait for the judge's ruling before deciding on the jet as it's probably a larger and immediate situation on your plate.

I don't know which company you are with but I can guess. Main point you should make is that the MD80's will be gone in the next 2-4 years. Transitioning now will enable you to plan for your son's future at a stable base and not be at the mercy of the TDY which will come as the number of MD80's dwindle.

It's definitely NOT American as they ONLY refer to the MD-80 as the Super 80.

The World is on to the secret of the MD80

If you're at AA, perhaps it could help to point out that the 80-ALV went down 9 hrs this month in DFW

And, as someone mentioned, maybe compile some of those foreign carrier solicitations that point to the Airbus experience as the opener of doors.

It's a tough situation. As I understand it, you need to show a judge that moving to a different base on a different aircraft is justified by your career vs. staying where you are where you probably share custody and the judge wants you to have a damn good reason for moving out of town and taking your son with you.

There's plenty of good reasons obviously. If the company is shrinking the MD-80 fleet and growing the airbus fleet that's something a judge can comprehend easily but it's hard to put a dollar value onto. Definitely take a look at average line values on the two fleets, might be something there. Reserve vs. Lineholder also.

If the base you are considering moving to has a training facility and you say you want to go into the training department that would be a no-brainer, show the training department pay for the judge.

You might consider cost of living in the new city.

Good luck.

The 80 will be long gone before the Bus.

There is no good reason for taking a child away from a parent unless they are unfit or the move is the very last option to provide for the child. I don't think that's the case here and I suspect the courts would agree.

Have no idea what airline your with, but if I found myself in a similar situation I would consider several factors.

Would I be more or less senior if I switched airplanes? Would the quality of life based on the current schedules be better or worse? Then of course look at the pay and bases. If your an F/O then I would also ask myself which one I'd make Captain on faster.

Answer the above questions and I'm sure you'll get the answer your looking for.
