Default How is check airman staffing determined ?

Hello

How is Check Airman staffing determined at the majors ? Is there a magic ratio per line pilots, aka 1 Check Airman per 10 pilots, or is it based on fleet/airframe numbers, etc ?

Thank You

I'm sure it varies from company to company. At spirit I do not know of any model we follow. The number needed varies drastically if you are currently hiring and training vs just recurrent events.

OK. Didn't know if some magic formula existed. Thank you

I can add a small amount of pennies to the jar. At Spirit we are held by the CBA (as Line Check Airmen, sim is different) to flying training lines two of every three months or 3/4 of the fiscal year. That is a huge deciding factor as to how many LCA's we train and fly given the ongoing hiring (which varies per month) There are also pure Line Check lines which are equivalent to a Turkish prison stint...i.e. Sitting on the third chair for countless hours. Upgrades, new hires and CBA restrictions (which are healthy) all play a role in the number... hope this helps.

You're backwards and it applies to sim guys too. Instructors only have to bid into the training dept once every 3 months.

I don't mind the LC lines. A MSP turn that's worth only 3.5 pays out 5.5 and I'm back for lunch.

No set formula. This question is timely b/c there is a draft FAA Notice in the works to clarify this very subject. One company I am familiar with has a "guideline" or "goal" that whatever check is required (proficiency, type ride, MV, IOE or LOE) should be sked within 7 days from completion of the requisite training.
