Default Ralph Knight

Terribly sad news that Ralph was killed in a mid-air collision while giving a checkride.

He was a great person, pilot and friend. Ralph lived a wonderful life and passed doing what he loved: mentoring young pilots.

Ralph William Knight, Sr., of Lantana, died unexpectedly on July 17, 2018. He was born on October 17, 1945 in Huntington, NY, the third child of John D. Knight and Margaret Park Knight. He spent his early years on Long Island, NY and graduated from Cutler Academy in Craftsbury, VT in 1964. He graduated from the State University of New York in Canton, NY in 1966 and earned an Aeronautical Engineering degree at Miami Dade College and Burnside-Ott Flight School, Opa Locka, FL in 1970. Following his father's love of flying, Ralph's aviation career spanned over 50 years - first as a flight instructor and examiner, then into corporate aviation, from Miami to Palm Beach. He owned and operated Knight Air Flight School at Lantana Airport from 1989 to 2000. Most recently he has worked again as an FAA Designated Flight Examiner. He was a natural and highly skilled aviator, certified to fly several types of aircraft from single and twin engine, float planes and jets. He taught thousands of people to fly, most importantly his own two sons, and was happiest when in the air. He was a faithful member of Maranatha Christian Church in Pompano Beach, FL. He had a goodness for loving, helping and serving people of all ages and backgrounds. We will miss shared journeys to faraway places, his laughter, compassion and wisdom. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Monica Domingues of Lantana, FL, his son Ralph "Bill" Knight, Jr., wife Deidre and granddaughters Olivia and Julia of Ashburn, VA; son Andrew Knight, former wife Danielle, granddaughter Alexandra, grandsons Luke and Samuel of Kenmore, WA, stepson Guilherme and granddaughter Alice of Sao Paulo, Brazil; a sister Rilla Roberson of Cantonment, FL, a brother John D. Knight of Utica, MI and brother Richard Knight of Niceville, FL; and his former wife, Marty Knight of Boynton Beach, FL; and several nieces and nephews. A time of gathering and memorial for family and close friends will be held at the Lantana Airport, Saturday, July 28 at 10:00AM. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to continue Ralph's legacy in aviation via a memorial fund at: (https://www.gofundme.com/ralph-knight-memorial-fund).
