Exactly, then the playing field would be even.

Probably true, but to buy off the top 2000 would cost the company around 2 billion. It may be a small price to pay to get the deal done.

That's where the rat poison and Viagra come in.

This is a MEMO from DAL mgt that a friend sent to me... I don't think the DAL boys should worry to much they have a strong team behind them. NWA on the other hand not a strong team... Douglas M. Steenland is not my idea of a strong leader.

Internal Memorandum

Date: February 26, 2008
To: Delta Colleagues Worldwide
From: Richard Anderson and Ed Bastian
Subject: Richard and Ed Memo: Update on Consolidation

The media continues to have daily coverage speculating on the airline industry, including speculation involving Delta. As you know, for several months our Board and leadership have been reviewing strategic alternatives, including potential consolidation, to ensure that Delta maintains its leadership position in the industry.

Our review has been guided, from the beginning, by certain principles that have to be met if there were to be consolidation with another airline. Our principles are:

• that the airline be called Delta, headquartered in Atlanta

• that the seniority of our people is protected

• that the pension plans of our employees and retirees are maintained

• that the network is strengthened and our plans for international expansion are accelerated

• and, most importantly, that there is even greater job security along with more career opportunities for our people

To date, we have not arrived at a potential transaction that meets all of our principles. Rest assured that we will not complete a transaction unless all of these conditions are met. We have a strong stand-alone plan. We will maintain our attention on executing that plan while we continue to look at strategic alternatives.

We appreciate the professionalism and dedication you show every day in running the airline. It is the “Delta Difference” that sets us apart.

Thank you.

Let me think....now where have I heard that kind of rhetoric before....Oh yeah...I remember...Sounds like the kind of speeches he used to give when he was CEO of NWA. You know right before the Mechanic strike and bankruptcy one-two punch. As if he didn't know what was up...

I suspect he knows exactly what's up and exactly what he's doing. Suppose that, for some reason, he doesn't want a merger, but must placate the creditors (who do want one). The pilots are solving his problem.

Anderson left NWA in 2004 over 1 year before the mechanics strike in 2005. That's when Steenland took over.

That is true, Mr Anderson had already jumped ship. He went to become a executive vice president of United Health Group. I think he got something like a 20 million dollar raise.

Anderson left partly because he didn't agree the way NWA was heading into BK, i.e. liquidate almost all gate agent and all mx. Most of not all of the nasty stuff in BK is all from Steenland. Just ask any NWA mx guys got axed.

Agreed. I don't think that Anderson wanted to be associated with the bloodletting at NW. On the other hand I do think that the company fully intended to break the mechanics union. In addition to cost savings, they were looking down the road at a merger and probably wanted their most militant union off the property. I'm wondering if Steenland was promoted so that he could swing the cost-cutting axe and then take a golden parachute when a merger was announced. R.A. comes along again to bring everyone together as one big happy family. Good cop-bad cop. Sounds cynical, I know, but I believe that management has been planning this for some time.
