NWA MEC Letter

The MEC Officers are a unified team that continues to do its best to serve the Northwest pilots at a difficult time and at great sacrifice to our families. We are tired of threats, distractions and obstruction when we should be united in a common purpose - seniority list integration. The constant public and private sniping by a minority of pilots is a tremendous impediment to our primary function of representing you the Northwest pilots. It further diminishes our credibility to facilitate negotiations between the Northwest and Delta pilots in regard to seniority list integration.

The MEC Officers agree with the Arbitration Panel that it is in both pilot groups' interest to achieve a negotiated settlement. Any negotiated settlement must meet the fair and equitable standard of both pilot groups' SLI Representatives. As a reminder, the SLI Representatives were determined by the MEC and no MEC Officer is a SLI Representative.

In less than 2 weeks the MEC Officers will be asked to represent, make decisions and/or testify during the SLI Arbitration. It is time to decide to either support the current MEC Officer Team or replace us. The MEC Officers have called for a MEC meeting by teleconference on October 8th and willingly stand for a vote of no confidence and consideration of Recall.

In the case of a vote of no confidence, the MEC Officers will immediately withdraw from facilitating, strategizing or testifying in regard to the seniority arbitration. We will continue to provide logistics as expressly requested by the NWA Merger committee. We believe this action is required by false accusations about our efforts on behalf of the Northwest pilots. In addition a Recall ballot will be placed on the agenda of the third Quarter MEC meeting.

One of the accusations made is that the SLI Representatives are surrounded by compromise inclined volunteers (yes voters). While this defies logic, the apparent concern is the intent to influence the SLI Representatives to accept an unfavorable settlement. We stand by all the volunteers' resolve to represent the Northwest pilots in a fair and equitable manner.

It should be noted that our seniority is as important to us as it is to every pilot at Northwest. We appreciate the support of the vast majority of the pilots we represent. Please call any of us with your questions and concerns.

Fraternally,
Dave Stevens, Monty Montgomery and Mark Young

Is this true or TIC?

There are a few malcontents that are stirring the pot. One in particular is posting a lot on the NW section of the ALPA bulletin boards and sending out e-mail for mas distribution making some wild accusations.

I know every person named in the e-mail and I know the person that sent the e-mail. IMO the sender of the e-mail is, in this particular case, mostly full of feces. Caveat: The resignation of two Communication Committee members has yet to be explained.

Of course he might also have more spies than I do at the hearing and in MEC meetings.

I have excerpted some of the email below

*** DISCLAIMER ***
<This is not my post, text in red it is an excerpt from an e-mail being circulated to small groups of NW pilots. I have redacted certain names and their ALPA positions since they are not the primary target of the email and are unkowingly being cited as "witnesses">

The NW MEC Officers have , in response to these accusations, called the bluff and are calling a special MEC meeting for a vote of confidence (see Blue Text)

ACCUSATIONS BEING CIRCULATED BY E-MAIL

DAVE “THE BULLY” STEVENS

Day by day the true Dave Stevens is coming into view to the NWA line pilots. Before I even walked in the door Stevens marched up to me, got within 2 inches and told me I was lucky he had not already kicked me out of ALPA and that he was going to do so soon. I started crying and begged Dave to let me stay in; I even offered to kiss his ring.

It is time for everyone to stop being intimidated and tell the truth.

-Joint Contract-the Negotiating Committee will tell you, if pressed, they could have achieved another 2% DC for everyone and the higher A-320/319 pay rates, but Stevens ignored them because he thinks he is “the closer”. Please do not take my word for this, check the facts for yourself.

-Resignations, resignations, resignations-everyone knows the communicators that resigned are great guys. They could not stand another day with “the closer” or the vote counting future DAL BOD member. Stevens was busted bragging that he has 7 NWA MEC votes and 10 DAL MEC votes for DAL BOD rep. The communicators found this to run counter to the immediate needs of the NWA pilot group. Who cares about the SLI when you can rub elbows with the DAL Board or Directors? Please rest assured the DAL MEC will not be electing “the closer” to any DALPA position.

-XXXXXXXX-Captain XXXXXXXX was also in attendance for day one. Stevens came up to XXX and asked him what he was doing here at the arbitration. He stated that XXX was very senior and a 747-400 captain and would be unaffected by the SLI, why would he bother? For those of you who know XXX, you know that he took the time and effort to come because he cares about every NWA pilot and he wanted to show his support to the Merger Committee for all their heroic efforts. It does not surprise me in the least that Stevens cold not take this in. Dave is for Dave.

FEAR FACTOR

Other than XXXXXXXX everyone performing NWA ALPA work is afraid of Dave Stevens. You can see it on their faces. You can feel the weight on their shoulders. Stevens wants a negotiated list at any cost. Think of the consequences of a substandard list: more weekends and holidays away from your families, more January vacation, more crappy trips and far less pay. XXXXXXXXX will point out within 3 seconds of reading this that Stevens does not have a vote and I will point out that:

<PREVIOUS MEC CHMN> AND <PREVIOUS NEGOTIATOR> NEVER HAD A VOTE EITHER!

DO NOT UNDERESTIMATE DAVE STEVENS AND HIS DESIRE TO BE THE ALPA BOD MEMBER!

THE BULLIED

It is amazing that all the people who have allowed Stevens and XXXXXX to bully them cannot look you in the eye. I passed <NAME AND POSITION REDACTED> 30 times in the hall at the arbitration; he could not look me in the eye once. It is the same for the reps in SEA, MEM and ANC. They all have looked the other way when they know full well that Steven’s behavior is totally unacceptable. They have let us all down and failed to fulfill their obligation to the pilots they represent.

It is time for these pilots to take back their dignity and tell Stevens, “NO MORE”.

THE RECALL

It is too late to recall Stevens, but it is not too late for us to regain control.

Stevens’s private agenda must be derailed. I can say without hesitation that every second from now until November 20th Stevens will exert extreme pressure on the Merger Committee to settle regardless of the ramifications. He must be stopped. Do not underestimate him, he is out of control.

What can you do? You can do 2 things.

1) Write an email to Stevens demanding he stand aside and let the Merger Committee make the decision to negotiate a settlement that they alone deem to be acceptable or leave it to the very capable arbitrators.

2) Write an email to the Merger Committee telling them that you believe in them and support them 100%.

Don't worry. Every group has their trolls. You know, the guys who constantly live under the conspiracy theory assertions. It amazes me how they get through the psych evals but they do. In the meantime, they hijack the respective ALPA forum threads which is why I go here. On a bad day, its much more civilized and level headed here.

So what happened yesterday with the vote?
Did Stevens get recalled?
Is there a new Communications Committee in place?

Seems to be some turmoil at NWALPA.

No. It was supposed to be a teleconference meeting, but they decided to do it in person at the 10-15 meeting. Nobody's getting recalled, they're just calling the bluffs of a few guys that think they can be the new MEC Chairman. They'll have a recall vote on the 15th, and it will unanimously fail IMO.

Carl,

You nailed it. This is good news for all of us, as I'm more confident now that both sides will actually be able to NEGOTIATE a list that can be perceived as fair by the most number of pilots of both airlines, rather than abdicate that responsibility to an outsider.

Of course, there will always be those who will say for the rest of their career how they got screwed in the merger, but hopefully they'll be in the minority on both sides.

Good luck to all of us next week, as we hear NWALPA's version of "fair and equitable".

Report: council backs NWA union official

Minneapolis / St. Paul Business Journal - by Katharine Grayson Staff Writer

A top Northwest Airlines Corp. pilots union official has gained a “vote of confidence” from a council governing the union, according to an Associated Press report.
The Eagan-based carrier’s pilots are now negotiating with their counterparts at Atlanta-based Delta Air Lines Inc., as the airlines prepare to merge. The unions are crafting a seniority list, which will determine which pilots will get benefits such as better schedules. A few pilots had expressed concern that NWA’s (NYSE: NWA) union members may be biased because they will be pursuing seniority perks, according to the report.
However, in a vote Thursday, the union’s executive council passed a resolution backing union leaders.
