United Airlines Takes New Strength Into Talks
#11
I think that your proposed longevity for UAL furloughees will be one of the most divisive issues between our two pilot groups, if it comes to that. Perhaps I'm stating the obvious, but I'm echoing my coworker's sentiment. I'm not saying what's right, wrong, fair, whatever... I'm just talking. It would be a crushing blow to me personally, so naturally I'm a bit biased. How many years of ACTIVE service do the most senior UAL furloughees have?
The SLI won't be determined by us pilots anyways

Couple more things that need to be in place if Tilty wants his payday......
*Longevity for ALL furloughees
*50 seat scope remains
*Industry leading contract........no concessions (keep and strengthen UAL work rules and keep and strengthen CAL pay in the joint contract)
*All furloughees are recalled (keeping 50 seat scope will do this)
*Unrestricted stock in the combined company
*A no furlough clause that works........
Not necessarily in that order

What do you mean by Unrestricted stock in the combined company? Was there a limit an employee could purchase through a stock purchase plan?

The announcement that USAir is out of play is great news to the CAL pilot group. Puts CAL squarely in the driver's seat. I'd like to see a "merger of equals" with UAL, but that's just not the case right now. If UAL recalled all furlouhgee's, got their scope fixed, stopped bleeding cash, I'd love to get some of that great UAL unionism on CAL property; we really need it. We don't need furloughs with more longevity than our jr CA's and 90 seat rj's flying hub-to-hub. With the USAir prospect dead, why in the world would we merge with UAL? This deal is DEAD.

Wishful thinking.

UAL CAL Stock for Stock Merger
By Zachary R. Mider, Mary Schlangenstein and Mary Jane Credeur
April 22 (Bloomberg) -- UAL Corp.’s United Airlines and Continental Airlines Inc. are considering a stock-for-stock merger with no market premium, said two people with knowledge of the talks, creating a company valued at more than $6 billion.
UAL Chief Executive Officer Glenn Tilton, 62, would become chairman while Continental CEO Jeff Smisek, 55, would become CEO, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the details are private. The terms aren’t final and a deal may be more than a week away, the people said.
Other directors and executives at the combined airline also may be drawn from the board and management at both companies, the people said. Most of those appointments have yet to be worked out, one of the people said.
Based on today’s closing stock prices, the merged carrier would have a market value of $6.6 billion. UAL’s value was about $3.64 billion and Houston-based Continental’s was about $2.98 billion, according to data compiled by Bloomberg. UAL jumped as much as 89 cents, or 4.1 percent, to $22.60 at 4:42 p.m. after the close of regular Nasdaq Stock Market trading. Continental slid as much as 46 cents, or 2.1 percent, to $20.97 on the New York Stock Exchange.
Jean Medina, a spokeswoman for Chicago-based United, declined to comment. A message left with Continental’s Julie King wasn’t immediately returned.
The discussions were described today after US Airways Group Inc. said it had ended merger talks with United. People familiar with those negotiations said Tempe, Arizona-based US Airways withdrew after concluding that United was more interested in pursuing a tie-up with Continental.
United and US Airways began discussions in mid-February, and the United-Continental talks started this month, people have said.

OK, let's see here...
I agree, and for United pilots too.
Umm, false.
Also false. This could easily be done a la DAL/NW if everyone behaves.
Not bloody likely, but it better happen before CAL does any more hiring.
70 is the new 50...get used to it.
Inaccurate.
Yes you do.
You mean furloughees? Don't worry, I bet your left seats end up safe.
Inaccurate. You must have us confused with USAir.
Because long term we we will all end up much better off together than separate, with an a$$ kicking route structure and more opportunity for all of us. Oh, and false.
BTW, do you guys still have those hot breakfast sandwiches? I've always been treated like family on CAL. I hope it works out for everyone.
Cheers,
Taco

I do have a lot of respect for your group as unionist, and think the combination would be a great airline. UAL is a great airline that I hope regains it's position as an industry leader. Just hope we can codeshare until all furloughees are recalled. From what I understand, we will be hiring by year's end. SLI with UAL's 1,400+ furloughees will be disastrous.
If we do in fact merge, I look forward to working with you guys after the SLI bloodbath.
