iPad

New guy here. Getting ready to show for INDOC and going ahead and purchasing my iPad. What are the authorized versions and what kind of mounting system is used? Do we have to carry our own mounts or are they already installed in the aircraft? Thanks for the help!!

Bob Mount - google it. Or fat gecko mount (single or double suction) are only mounts authorized. You won’t need the mount till sim so can order on Amazon and have shipped to hotel while in training. iPad 9.7 or 10.5

Yeah, a mount isn’t needed till SIMs.

Pilotman7700 05-03-2018 12:18 PM

I realize you don’t need the mount till the sim, thanks. I’m concerned about it now because if I could get a mount such as the pivot I was going to save money by going ahead and getting it so my iPad could be protected in a case. No need to waste money by purchasing a case that I would only use for a few months just to put it in another case later. Does the company just not authorize the Pivot? It’s FAA certified. Looks like something that would be nice and save some space in that ole bag of ours. In this case then with the fat gecko and bob, what are good cases that work well with them?

You can only use the mounts approved by Mesa. I like the ipadDeckMount for the Ejet. It is easy. Fits nicely in a flight bag.

You need the iPad pretty close to day 1. The mount is day 40+.

These are my favorite cases. They’re far better than a bulky, ugly otterbox and about half the price, plus the rubber doesn’t get sticky. I’ve bought three of them, including one for my phone.

https://www.supcase.com/ipad-pro-9-7.html

I’ve used the single suction cup mount for 2 years and it’s been fine. I’d like the deck mount but its not worth the price they’re asking.

B.O.B. is CRJ only.

Do you need the cellular option or will just the WiFi option work? Which leads to a different question as to whether the flight software uploaded includes geo-tracking or not. What else should I know or options should I get with the iPad (considering the 10.5 pro)?

No requirement for cellular. You use WiFi at the hotel to keep it your charts and manuals up to date. I do have cellular service, but it isn’t required. I use it at the terminal or in the plane occasionally to get releases before ops brings them. No geo tracking is allowed at regionals. You need a standard sized iPad - the mini and larger sizes aren’t allowed. I bought the latest iPad since I wanted it to last for a while.

Mesa does allow the 10.5 pro. I use my cell service all the time but it is an extra luxury. I love my bob mount, it packs a much smaller foot print in my bag.

Some regionals do allow georeferenced taxi diagrams. Mesa used to have it but I guess it was cheaper to drop it.

Good Morning, I'm new to the regionals so was wondering why not opt in for the Cellular option on the iPad, the cellular option will give you built in GPS, otherwise you'll lose the situational awareness feature on Jepps, which is a great added feature.

Let me know which regional allows geo-referencing. The FAA does not allow geo-referencing for regionals. I would like to know which one has gotten around it with the FAA and maybe we can get our geo-referencing back.

Republic for sure and endeavor maybe. It just requires action through the POI for most 121 careers. Of course the EFB has to support the function. Also it has nothing to do with being a regional. The FAA made the change fall 2017.

I think for most folks it is a money issue. Just an observation, I’ve seen like one Capt have it. Like I’ve seen only about 20% of captains tip van drivers. Ok, maybe 40%...

I thought it had to do with GPS function accuracy of the iPad for 121 operations. We had it and the FAA forced us to turn it off.

Of course, Jeppesen supports the function. I know that SkyWest and ExpressJet also do not have it.

I found this information on the new EFB rules and uses in the cockpit.

I think, like ForeFlight, Jepps charged for georeferenced taxi diagrams. It is more likely that we stopped paying for it, not that the FAA took it away. Just my guess.

SkyWest doesn’t have it either and they have paid for 27.1 FMS Ejet load and pay for all the ACARS features (unlike Mesa). I will ask the next FAA jumpseater I have about it.

How much storage do you need on the iPad? I have a 64GB iPad currently and wondering if that is sufficient enough for the software. Starting training in April and want to make sure I can still use my existing iPad

Only the Apple iPad – iPad Series- (5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, and 9th Generations); Air Series - 3rd and 4th Generations, Pro Series - (9.7 inch, 10.5 inch, 11 inch 1st, 2nd and *3rd Generations) (*currently still sold by Apple). All iPads must be able to operate with the most current iOS available from Apple. These iPads may be used as a substitute for Jeppesen Inflight Pubs and as the Electronic Flight Bag (EFB), upon completion of the crewmember's required training

The iPad must be secured using one of the following:
a. Delkin Fat Gecko part approved securing device (part numbers DDMOUNT-AC-IPAD2-3, DDMNT-IPAIR or DDMNT-UTAB1 and DDMOUNT-SUCTION).
b. B.O.B. mount.(CRJ only).
c. iPad Deck Mount 190-201 (E-JET Only).

Enough to hold the jeppesen FD pro x app and a few pdf. So like 100mb or something. 64gb is way more than enough

Depends on the model. What is it?

Well Mesa does give $480 a year for iPad reimbursement.

Id very much have that money, and my own iPad, instead of a company supplied ipad with who knows what creepy spy and tracking software is on it.

buddies8 01-20-2023 05:02 PM

Spy tracking comes with the company apps.
