Delta teams up with Mesa Air unit

A Mesa Air Group subsidiary will fly up to 30 regional jets for Delta Air Lines under a 12-year agreement.
Delta said Wednesday that a subsidiary of Mesa, Freedom Airlines, will fly the 50-seat jets "throughout" Delta's network starting as soon as October.
The deal replaces flying previously done by Atlantic Coast Airlines. Delta dropped ACA last year after the airline re-launched itself as Independence Air, a now-struggling discount carrier based in Washington, D.C.
However, the agreement with Mesa — based in Tempe, Ariz. — apparently leaves Delta still on the hook for leases on 30 smaller Fairchild Dornier jets previously flown under the contract with ACA.
The agreement with Mesa "makes it economically attractive" to fly 50-seat Bombardier regional jets, which are "more flexible and effective" than the 32-seat Fairchild Dornier aircraft, said J.T. Fisher, president of Delta Connection, the airline's regional carrier operation.
Last year, ACA excercised a contract right requiring Delta to take up lease payments on the 30 regional jets that it formerly flew for Delta.
Atlanta-based Delta previously estimated that it may have to pay $300 million over 13 years for the leases.
