Mesa Cancelling Upgrades

Just heard from a friend who is still at Mesa...they are cancelling upgrade classes. ***?? Can't say I'm surprised. It was only a matter of time before that whole hot mess of an operation began to implode. Sorry for anyone who went there chasing that quickie upgrade.

JO can go screw himself. Don't feel bad for him or Mesa at all. For anyone and everyone still there: GET OUT NOW! Run for your life! I got out and things improved so much I can't even describe it in one post. My entire life improved and all the residual effects that go along with it. I'm even in better shape...the improvement to my mood inspired me to hit the gym more. At Mesa I was so beat down all the time all I wanted to do was eat my feelings and crash in front of the TV.

No, seriously. Life is better on the outside. Once you leave Scare Shuttle you will understand what I mean.

The upgrade classes are still there. They just are re running the bid award. Same class dates and everything. They couldn't fill IAD CA vacancies bc not enough qualified people currently have it in their standing bid. Plenty of CA qualified people who want E175 CA and DFW/PHX CA. Get a life bro.

Skyvector 04-05-2016 09:04 PM

Are they cancelling upgrade classes outright? Or are they just shuffling class dates around? I've been around long enough to know how these things work. Not enough CAs to fill one vacancy bid so they cancel it and funnel everyone into another class down the road.

Either way, keep your chin up Mesa. I'm not a fan of Mesa as an airline or JO as a person but wish you guys the best.

*Edit: ^^Looks like me and BeatNavy posted at the same time. Looks like I was right! lol...

Doesn't matter. It's a chink in the armor-such as it is. Mesa is a leaky dam that will burst at any moment. Cancelling upgrade classes is bad, man. The so-called reasons they give are just an attempt at keeping the masses ignorant of the approaching wild fire. Like I said before, GET OUT NOW! Run for your life...

There is no excuse to subject yourself to the purgatory that is Mesa when EVERYONE is hiring. The wholly owned airlines are the ticket these days...and I know that cuts painfully deep to the folks over at Skywest who love to turn their noses up at everyone.

Ok. I'm not going to gloat or even pursue this thread any further. I don't work at Mesa so I see that as out of bounds. I would suggest the same for you. Don't be like so many other hyenas on this forum who trash talk airlines they don't work for. And I would especially not kick anyone when they are down. Bad form man.

HighFlight 04-05-2016 09:34 PM

Funny, the sims have been full every day this past week. Just spoke to a pair of CA upgrades today. They seemed pretty happy to be where they were.

Just remember, HL... Mesa has been around longer than you. I suspect they will be here quite a long time from today. I doubt they will implode because you left. A piece of advice - don't become one of the used-to-be's that hang around the old company threads, trying to spread gloom and doom. There's already more than enough of those here on APC. Move on, and be happy you are making a better world for yourself.

No upgrade classes were canceled. They are rerunning the bid hoping people will fill the IAD CA vacancy so they don't have to hire street captains.

Doesn't hurt at all, we're losing people to the majors in droves. So much so that even with 80 newhires starting every month, we're barely keeping up with attrition.

Lose weight and improve your airline QOL with this ONE WEIRD TRICK!

Where are you getting 80 new hires from? That is pretty good since many regionals can't get 10. I can understand Skywest getting guys and maybe Envoy and PSA but where are they all coming from? Is everyone just going from one regional to another?

Endeavor is 50-60/month. Not sure about others.

The hype about the "pilot shortage" is way overblown obviously. New hires keep rolling in magically.

My thoughts exactly; however, there has to be something going on here. What would be behind the spike in pay, bonuses, etc. for the regional side?

...not to mention the amazingly relaxed requirements for applying at some places. 25 hours of multi is only 10-15 hours beyond earning the rating itself.

iFlyRC 04-06-2016 10:27 AM

Its not the pilot shortage at the regional level, it's 10 years from now, you better have your foot in the door somewhere in the 121 world.
Theres tons of people who left aviation a long time ago who now see an opportunity to get back into it and get current again. I fly with them every day. Even friends of mine who left and started small businesses are coming back into aviation.

I can remember being lectured both as a student in flight school and as a single engine CFI that I would never get hred at any regional with less than 100 hours multi time. It was the hot ticket just a few years ago and according to some would never change. Ever.

"Gotta get that multi bro or you'll b a career CFI..."

And yet here we are. My new hire FO sim partner in the 175 here at Mesa has a whopping 25 hours of multi time and is not an MEI.

So 50 to 60 at Endeavor, 100 at Skywest (65 CRJ and 35 ERJ), 80 at Mesa. What about PSA, Envoy, Expressjet, etc? I know TSA and Compass are getting 40 to 50 and Gojet is getting 4 or 5.Any other real numbers?

HighFlight 04-07-2016 07:11 PM

I'd go with 50. I haven't seen a class over 25 yet. 60 is a goal, but to my knowledge, hasn't been met yet.

I'd say the AAG wholly owneds are each averaging about 20 /month as of right now.

And I'm not sure, but some of those numbers are a little inflated.

NovemberBravo 04-07-2016 11:02 PM

I don't think Mesa is getting 80 a month.

NovemberBravo 04-07-2016 11:03 PM

And yeah Mesa is still upgrading people just shuffling classes around because CRJ upgrade means permanent reserve.

No. The class dates are the same. Look at Standing Bid 16-09 and 16-10. They are both 14 Ejet upgrades on 5/26 and 6 CRJ on 5/5 and 6 CRJ on 5/19. No classes were shuffled. The only difference is they added a DFW CA slot. A single one. They took that from the PHX CA expected vacancy. That is the only difference. I don't know how people (to include the company) are making a big deal about this other than to generate talk on the street about potential street captains...all because we can't fill our IAD CA vacancy. Go figure.

tinman1 04-08-2016 08:50 AM

Can't blame anyone for avoiding IAD CA. Endless reserve and not much extra discretionary income when compared to a DFW/IAH FO if you factor cost of living in domicile.

20sx 04-08-2016 12:03 PM

If we get street captains, it'll be four of them. Not a big deal.
