He should have been well prepared to begin solving this problem. It's not like he is asking how to solve a shortage of military lawyers. He IS a pilot... it IS his career field. Has he not been paying attention for 3 decades?
I took this as more of a stunt. This question has been asked at every level for at least the past 2 years in the mobility world. It's infuriating that they continue to ask the same questions, especially since the answers are always the same. Fix QOL, make flying the primary duty (as opposed to my side gig when I am neck deep in queep), do an audit of deployments and figure out what is really NEEDED.

If they just keep asking the question over and over, eventually someone will suggest some low-hanging, irrelevant fruit for senior leadership to pick.

Then, Blue leadership will be able to declare that they've listened to the masses and done what you asked, so suck it up and stop complaining and don't you dare leave for the airlines, quitters!

He was also in his crew dog years when 9/11 kicked off. Unbelievable. I'm not saying flight time is a measure of ability to command but this is a huge trend item in the AF where it is seethingly obvious that what you do in the jet does not matter in your path to command.

The commanders I respected the most flew the crap out of the airplane, were the most knowledgeable instructors AND lead the squadron/group/wing well and took care of their people.
Yeah, but to get in their position, they had to go to school. Then SAASS, then be an intern at the Pentagram. Then get a Ph.D at Army War College. So please pardon their inability to understand how much life sucks for the working pilot. And like Hacker said...Don't even think about leaving for the airlines.
