Default Current status of AFRC Unsponsored Boards

Does anyone here have current knowledge of the status of the Air Force Reserve Unsponsored UFT Selection Boards (i.e. whether they're still happening and how frequently)? I'd like to apply and I got in touch with a recruiter in my area, but he told me they're not doing unsponsored boards due to a backlog of unsponsored pilot trainees. I'm not sure if he means AFRC isn't doing them at all at the moment or if he means that just this recruiting region specifically has met its quotas (he used the word "we"). I'm guessing the latter since I've recently read about AFRC pilot slots going unfilled. He just went on leave so it will be a while before I hear back from him again.

If the boards are still going on, is there anything that actually prohibits me from working with a recruiter in a different region? I have an Active Duty CSO slot lined up and as a result I've already got a valid MEPS physical, valid flight physical, and my security clearance investigation has been initiated, so I think it would be a pretty painless process for the recruiter even if done remotely (just relinquish my AD slot, have my records transferred to AFRC, do some paperwork, then swear in if selected).

My unit hired a guy who was unsponsored in the Nov board. I heard in January’s board there were unsponsored guys, then heard March was all sponsored guys. I know of one other person a couple weeks ago who was told no more unsponsored applicants for now. Boards are still once every two months. Next is in May I believe. No idea about switching recruiters or doing it out of your area. I wish I had switched mine.

I'm going through the process myself, every recruiter I have talked to didn't even know the unsponsored board existed.. I still need the physical but ill let you know what happens once that's out of the way.

Ok guys (and gals)... here is status of unsponsored Reserves straight from horses’ mouth.

Program was introduced because MAF was taking so long to get candidates to boards. They were coming up short every year. It acts as a bridge to fill the un-filled slots. Last year, they turned in 20+ slots. This year, they have around 100, but many more applicants than slots available, a good chunk of them sponsored. First choice is to take sponsored candidates, then fill if needed by unsponsored. So, yes, there are no Unsponsored Boards for a while. They got the candidates. But, that doesn’t mean if your a great candidate you won’t be picked up unsponsored and “injected” into process. But, it does mean your going to have to be “overqualified” for the immediate future. The bare minimums ain’t gonna cut it right now. In reality, we do not have a problem recruiting new pilots, we have a problem retaining them later in their career.

I’m helping a few of you, and will continue to help anyone who needs it. Feel free to reach out. My advice (which probably ain’t worth much), make sure you get everything done (AFOQT, TBAS, Medical, initiate security) and apply to every unit you could see yourself wanting to join and become part of for the long haul. At the same time, then apply to unsponsored. Burn the candle at both ends.

As my dad would say, “where there’s a will, there’s a way”
