Technically they didn't control thrust effectively. Given that, they did OK with with A/S and V/S... stalling while trying to hold the G/S would have killed them.

In the C-130 crash, they correctly identified the failed engine and had successfully feathered the failed engine. Given that it was Day VMC at a relatively light Gross Weight, success should have been a foregone conclusion.
