Default Dealing with commercial flight operations

Who has delt with low time civilian flight jobs while being in military reserves (not an officer)? Whom did you work for and how were the logistics worked out for drills/annual tour (training)?

What is a low time civilian flight job? How is that relevant to the follow on question?

What exactly are you wanting to know?

Are you asking how mil leave works for say a banner towing or CFI job? Same way it works for every other company, flying or otherwise. It’s governed by USERRA and the employer has to let you off for mil days, with no ramifications or threat to your employment status due to said military service.

This.

However... many part 91/61/141 operations are pretty mom-and-pop or fly-by-night, often run by uneducated "characters". It's possible to encounter folks who don't want to comply with the law, or will give you a hard time about it. The problem there is that as an entry-level pilot you cannot afford to get fired or have negative recommendations from past employers.

My suggestions for entry-level GA jobs:

1) Clearly communicate your military duty schedule with potential employers before accepting the job. Don't take the job if it sounds like it's going to be a big problem. At this point in your career you need to not make waves.

2) Larger flight schools might be a better fit in that regard, more likely to have HR policies and knowledge of the law, have dealt with reserves before, and have enough staff to cover down.

Once you get to an airline and off probation, you can hunker down with the union and ESGR and insist on your USERRA rights if necessary. Most airlines are pretty good about it anyway.
