Spoke with a former vice Wing commander. In a recent six month span both he and the Wing commander retired for airline jobs. Wing CC was probably looking at O-7. FO at a major was more attractive for both of them.

Reminds me of the O-5(future O-6?)in the pilot retention office who retired for an airline job.

Living near your extended family, with no brick, and just being responsible to show up on time, isn’t a bad retirement gig.

In the grand scheme, the benefits of Flag/General rank don't even stack up to airlines when times are good. A retired O7+ can make the money, but he can get a similar deal with airlines for a lot less work, and the sooner he starts, the better.

You really should want to do it to pursue O7+.

I have flown with several O-7 F/Os that are in the guard or reserve.

O-7 over 22 yrs makes $12,297/month; over 32 years is $12,607.
O-10 over 32 years makes $15,583. Same at over 40. And, O-9 is exact same as the O-10...these guys work 28 days a month, 12+ hr days.

A Legacy NB FO in yr 3 makes $11,700/month, before per diem and DC.
A Legacy NB CA in yr 7 makes $19,500/month just for mins or sit reserve. These guys work 10-15 days a month, often 12 hr days.
Any questions?

Retired GO/FO can make quite a bit more than any of that in private-sector executive jobs, but you'd need at least two, maybe three stars to get into the stratospheric realm of compensation. Airlines is certainly easier for what you get.

I work for one. But they generally pursued both tracks in parallel. Not a bad way to go.

But good luck trying to be a "reserve" admiral in the Navy... they are going to put you to work (ie orders), and it won't be near home. It may or may not be in a third world toilet, but it will be far from home.
