Default Career Prospects While In Military Reserve

Hello Everyone,

I have been searching the forums and the general web for opinions regarding job prospects if you are currently in military reserves. My question is mainly geared toward the major airlines as I feel most regionals would not care in today’s market.

I am concerned that airline recruiters may look down on reservists because of potential scheduling conflicts down the line. What are your views on this? Also, if there are other reasons recruiters may look down on military reservists, what are they?

I would like to believe that being in the military reserves would actually be a plus in airline recruiter’s eyes, but I would like to hear everyone’s thoughts on this because it has been a concern lingering in the back of my mind.

Thanks for any feedback in advance.

I'm suspect some majors might weigh that factor just a little bit, at least informally, at the interviewer level. It's not in their formula or policies, that would be proof of very illegal hiring policy.

But I and all my buddies ended up at good majors. I would not quit the reserves on that vague suspicion, if you otherwise want to participate. The reserve network can be a huge factor.

What they are probably trying to sniff out at the interview is the guy who's going to finish training, get on line, and then drop two year orders to bang out of his juniority. That pizzes people off. I advise my guys not to do that, because it poisons the well for the rest of us. If you come to me seeking approval for such orders, you're going to hear the riot act unless you have some mitigating circumstances (military career timing would be one).

Thanks for your outlook. I was actually thinking of going into the reserves after receiving employment (not with the intention of skipping airline reserves) so that the airlines don’t potentially hold it against you during their decision making. However, now that you’ve said that, I definitely won’t do that.

Anyone else?

Judging by the number of airline pilots in the reserves and guard, myself included, it’s not an issue.
