Air National Guard Pilot

I’m a current Air National Guard member in Michigan. I am prior service army with 4 years active, and one year Army Reserves. I got out and have been in the ANG for a little over a year. Currently a maintainer. I was wondering what it entails to apply for UPT? I know that time is not on my side right now, I am 26 years old and enlisted. I only have little credit hours right now but know that there are programs at my base that “fast track” semesters. I am not sure if it is even feasible at this point, but was just curious if anyone knows of any pointers or has any advice. Being a pilot was something I’ve always dreamt of and wanted to do but stupidly didn’t chase after high school like I wish I would have.

You got time. Contact units and talk to the pilots, not the recruiters. Then rush (visit the units on a drill weekend). Visit the forums on baseops.net. Take the AFOQT and TBAS. Good luck.

Here’s a job listing for a fighter unit down in Florida, it’ll give you an idea of what Air National Guard units are looking for. Every job listing looks pretty much like the one below, same basic requirements. You can visit the site that the user above listed along with bogidope.com to find the lastest job listings. Best of luck!

You have time, I have recently seen a person get hired at 36 by a unit. As others suggested figure out what you want to fly and start rushing those units. Also, if you are looking at heavies, you could try to get a boom or loadmaster job to get your foot in the door at a unit. Good luck.

Don’t waste any time and now is the best time. Units usually start cutting off applicants who have less than 2 years prior to the entry deadline of turning 30 years old. There are physicals, clearances, commissioning sources, introductory flight training (unless you have a PPL - this requirement may not exist still? Someone can clarify) etc. that must be accomplished prior to entry. Granted, age waivers do exist but cannot be relied upon. I myself had an age waiver and entered UPT 3 months prior to turning 32 as a senior Capt in the USAF. I was ANG sponsored and that was the key and now waivers might be a lot easier to attain? That was many moons ago and I have now retired after 24 years of service. You can make it happen as ANG units are hemorrhaging pilots to the airlines at a rapid rate!!! Everything runs in cycles in the military/airline industry. Go get it!

Only a few credits, gonna need to hustle on the degree. I don't think anyone but maybe your own unit will put any effort in until you have a degree, or at least a known graduation date.
