Default ATP Timing

For military pilots that meet the hours requirements for an ATP, is there an ideal time to get your ATP? I passed the ATP written back in 2014 on the old rules but missed the boat on the flying practical due to deployments, PCSing, life, etc. I still have about 3 years left on my commitment and the next 1.5 will be spent overseas. So, traveling back stateside to take the CTP class and practical will take some more time and money, but I don't know what my next (and hopefully last) assignment will look like.

Does the ATP CTP class and associated flying practical help you better prepare for the airlines? If so, is it better to wait until closer to my intended separation or just knock it out and check that box as soon as possible?

Also, any suggestions on where to get my ATP are greatly appreciated.

Are you in a flying billet and if so will you stay flying until you separate?

If so get the ATP-CTP done around 18 months out (when you return from overseas) and then get your ATP and put your apps out 6-12 months prior to separation.

If you’re not flight current just go to a regional and they’ll get you both the ATP-CTP and the ATP.

I am in a flying billet and should hopefully remain in one until I separate. Do you suggest 18 months just because I should be back stateside or do you think there are other benefits to waiting?

Get them done before you go overseas or immediately upon returning. The ATP-CTP and ATP won't do anything for you other than "check the box" and you will want to be focusing on interview prep and the transition during the last 18 months. If you are flight current the interview invites may start trickling in around 6 months out from your separation date. If you don't get calls from a major then start interviewing with regionals at 3 months prior to separation.
