Oth dd214

Is an OTH a show stopper for majors? Im in the Army and I’m facing one for an inappropriate relationship. It was a consensual relationship, but both of us were married.

I was just about to start an RTP , but obviously a major/legacy is my goal. I just don’t wanna play the regional game for 5-10 years if I don’t have a shot

Thanks for the replies

I'll only speak to what I know for AA.

Nowhere did the web based application ask about characterization of service. I was still on AD during the F2F, which was the only time anyone asked me to see a 214. Obviously didn't have one, but a letter from my command indicating my separation date apparently met the need. That leads me to believe that AA only cared that you were actually separated, or separating prior to your hire date (at least in the context of the 214).

I will let others speak to the other majors. Good luck.

In the past everybody, including regionals, asked for it. Some may have lightened up lately.

Regionals will most likely hire you anyway since the offense was minor, understandable, and a non-offense in the civilian world. I suspect many will not even ask.

I'm pretty sure at least some, if not most, of the top-tier majors will ask. Lower tier, maybe not, you'd probably need to get that from someone who interviewed at that specific airline recently.

But even if they don't ask for a DD214, you may still have to address these questions on the app and interview...

"Have you ever been terminated by an employer?"

"Why did you leave the military?"

Usually applications have you list each employer, including reason for leaving. What are you going to say?

You REALLY don't want to lie about something like that, especially at a career-destination airline because if it ever came to light later you would be sent packing with no recourse... possibly after years on property.

For app and interview purposes, I would only consider this a resignation if you can prove it was a resignation. The DD214 will have a separation code, if that code indicates a routine resignation or retirement then maybe you can make a case that the OTH was the punishment, and you were leaving anyway. If the sep code is anything weird, they will probably assume the departure was involuntary.

I would never lie about it, I’m just wondering if explaining the situation would lessen the stigma, or would just having an OTH make it next to impossible to get on at a major or legacy

I think it would be hard at a legacy, because of the stigma. You situation is about the most benign and harmless reason I could imagine for an OTH, so I suspect the initial reaction would be worse than the facts would really justify.

Second-tier majors might be more of an option. Job fairs might help you, since you could qive a quick explanation to the recruiter, an opportunity you might not otherwise get if you don't get called for an interview. Frankly some of them might even prefer to hire someone with an all-around good package, and an otherwise harmless background glitch which might turn off the top-tier (they know you'll stay).

I'd check with one of the airline interview consultants, they deal with this kind of stuff on a daily basis, and will have a better feel for the lay of the land across the industry (most of the people on these forums only interviewed with one, or zero, majors).

I’d get a good lawyer and try to prevent an OTH if it hasn’t been signed yet. Lots of precedent of guys getting honorable discharges with the same or worse infractions. I’m surprised a single instance (or single relationship) of infidelity would result in an OTH. I saw a lot of it in my army days, with all ranks, and not one ever got less than an honorable unless there was something else tied to it (sexual assault type stuff).

That said, if you went to envoy or another AA wholly-owned, you will flow to AA one day as a backup to any other major. May wanna talk to them and explain the situation and see what they say about hiring you if you end up with the OTH.

Ya, I’m fighting it. My lawyer said my command is trying to make an example of me: so far we are going off rumors and haven’t even seen the results of a 15-6, but the girl talked. She is married to another pilot and the investigating officer threatened her with a subpoena. So we’re certain they’ll substantiate the complaint, and then decide my punishment.

Im gonna try and get on with a WO ASAP. The union rep said it “shouldn’t” affect me being able to flow...in a decade 🤷🏻*♂️

Ya I’m trying to fight it. We haven’t seen the 15-6 results get abs no NJP has happened yet, but my lawyer thinks they are gonna try and make and example of me.

Is there more to your story? In the Air Force adultery is usually tacked onto other charges, rarely a stand alone charge. Did you let some Army flunkie defend you?

My lawyer is an army TDS guy. The last few guys that were in this situation got a GONAR and bad eval. The word is the general wasn’t happy bc they got off easy and wasn’t to make an example.

Nothing more. Im sure they’ll tack on conduct unbecoming, and general misconduct
