VSP payback
Any VSPers out there seen the updated statement of understanding? It now says that if you get a full time job in any service to include Guard/Reserve, that you will have to pay back the full amount of Sep pay received. It says that even if you signed the previous SOU, that it will still apply. I'm going to write a letter to my Congressman to inform him of this situation along with the repayment with retirement BS, and hopefully I can get some of the leadership at my soon to be Reserve unit involved.
I think we need to get as many VSPers as possible to do the same and see if we can't get this altered. Thoughts... |

You only pay it back if you retire from the guard/reserve and receive retirement benefits...that is nothing new. When VSP was first offered, this was one of the stipulations.

The 2nd issue was part of the initial deal that everyone agreed to. The 1st was not. So a guy may have been thinking "I'll take the VSP and then get the AGR slot for 5/6 years and then be done". The AF is now saying that if you do that then you have to pay the VSP back...that was not part of the original deal... |
Probably because when the bean counters decided to offer this VSP deal up last year, they didn't imagine all the loopholes and in-and-outs of the good deals in the guard and reserve. "What? This guy can take the VSP and still get paid on active duty in the guard? We can't have that!". Put it this way, if you take the VSP, they want you OUT for good. That's the whole point. Not serving as an AGR who could eventually collect a 20 year active duty retirement.

If you served as an AGR to get the retirement, then it you pay it back, because of the retirement. If someone, just does an AGR slot until something better comes around, that person shouldn't be forced to pay back the VSP.
I love how the Air Force still finds way of screwing you, even when you're not in the service anymore. They state on the website "Q: If I receive the VSP and later return to active duty do I have to pay the VSP back? A: Yes, Per law, an officer who accepts VSP and later returns to active duty (regardless of Service), including a full time active duty position in the Reserve or Guard, will have an amount deducted from their pay (schedule to be determined) until the total deducted from basic pay equals the total amount received. Exceptions: members involuntarily recalled to active duty or full-time National Guard duty IAW certain subsections of US Code 10 may not be subject to recoupment. This is not a change to the program, but many officers may not be aware of this provision." |
Does this include guys who go on active duty orders for a period of time?

Save the original attachment 11 you signed. It'll help you prove you didn't agree to vsp payback for AGR positions. I think you would have a strong case against paying it back.
But then again, it's government, and they make the rules. |
Be lucky that you can and have qualified for the VSP take your 100K and go find a civialian job. Good on you wanting to particapte in the military for years to come but you decided to take the VSP and get out.
