That man should have been the first Black President of the United States.

Gen. Powell was 84.5 years old, a full decade older than average life expectancy of an American male.

No less a tragedy.

Sad to see.

Probably would have made a great president (which is probably why he never ran).

It is sad. But again it raises the question:

Died OF COVID?

or

Died WITH COVID?

The median overall survival for patients diagnosed at age 80 years or older was 13.4 months, with those patients receiving systemic treatment having a median overall survival of 21.4 months, compared with 6.4 months for those not receiving treatment.

Reported that he died of covid complications. Didn't discuss whether he had another illness prior.

The family announced it in a Facebook release - soon confirmed by others:

His family said he was fully vaccinated against COVID-19. But he underwent prostate cancer treatment in 2003—and he was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2019, according to Kathy Giusti, founder of the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation, who was in touch with him about his illness. Giusti said her organization had booked Powell for a fireside chat in 2019 just because he was a popular figure and prostate cancer survivor. About a month before the event, he called to tell her he had just learned he had multiple myeloma.

They debated whether he should go public and the night of the event, “He was amazing... and he told the audience that he too was battling multiple myeloma.” The news, however, did not leak out until after Powell’s death.

Statement by Donald J. Trump, 45th President of the United States of America:

Wonderful to see Colin Powell, who made big mistakes on Iraq and famously, so-called weapons of mass destruction, be treated in death so beautifully by the Fake News Media. Hope that happens to me someday. He was a classic RINO, if even that, always being the first to attack other Republicans. He made plenty of mistakes, but anyway, may he rest in peace!

you stay classy San Diego....

Colin Powell had a degenerative nervous system disease (Parkinson's) and was also undergoing treatment for blood cancer (multiple myeloma). He was also 84 and was about as "at risk" for dying from COVID as you can get, even full vaccinated. The vaccines are great at preventing severe COVID requiring hospitalization in most individuals, but they are not 100% effective and they are not a cure. A lot of people seem to have never fully grasped this.

Which is sort of typical if you look at the age group demographics of COVID mortality. There are - unfortunately - a fair number of (mostly) elderly people who because of medical conditions are at risk for ANYTHING that comes along. Even a simple cold is going to destabilize their condition. And as I said on my not-altogether-clear initial comment on this thread, even appropriately treated the median survival of an 80+ year old diagnosed with multiple myeloma is only 21.4 months. General Powell was diagnosed in 2019 and we are now about two years past that. Maybe COVID gave him the final push, but at this point it wouldn’t have taken much.
