March AFB

Fellow pilots,

Heading out to March AFB for long-term training.

Any recommendations on long-term (5-6 months) properties for rent?

Would prefer to stay away from base lodging.

Thanks

Base lodging actually has a lot to recommend itself if you are going there…

https://www.neighborhoodscout.com/ca/riverside/crime

An excerpt:

With a crime rate of 40 per one thousand residents, Riverside has one of the highest crime rates in America compared to all communities of all sizes - from the smallest towns to the very largest cities. One's chance of becoming a victim of either violent or property crime here is one in 25. Within California, more than 93% of the communities have a lower crime rate than Riverside.

Importantly, when you compare Riverside to other communities of similar population, then Riverside crime rate (violent and property crimes combined) is quite a bit higher than average. Regardless of how Riverside does relative to all communities in America of all sizes, when NeighborhoodScout compared it to communities of similar population size, its crime rate per thousand residents stands out as higher than most.

If you don’t mind the drive, I’d strongly recommend renting a place up in Lake Arrowhead or Lake Gregory. Way nicer weather, unless you like slow cooking while outside. Moreno Valley and good chunks of Riverside are not where you want to be.

Enjoy the Reapers, talk to the Reserve units if you want to get back to real airplanes. I suspect they are hiring again.

Yeah the first thought that came to mind mind was Arrowhead or Big Bear.

Temecula Murrieta and Menifee are all really nice safe areas.

I commuted from Lake Arrowhead (just behind the village) to March for several years. It’s a 40-60 minute drive each way depending on traffic and your lead foot. Traffic varies dramatically over the course of a day. Obviously, I thought it was worth it. Lake Arrowhead is significantly cooler (temperature wise), cheaper to rent, and has lots of outdoor stuff to do (hiking, mountain biking, skiing, etc.). The drive up California 18 is a great way to decompress after a tough day at work. I primarily commuted by motorcycle and kept appropriate uniforms at the office. Gas in SoCal is stupid expensive.

Not bad at all! That's the life dude I love it up there. I spent a few years at Fort Irwin and would drive up to Big Bear and Lake Arrowhead every chance I got.
