ANG Ages
 
Hopefully I should be flying for a regional in December and taking the AFOQT soon there after. I will be 23 then and was wondering at what age realm does the Air Force / ANG like to see there new hires at? Lets say I was at this regional until I was 25 before getting a packet together and beginning the application process for a flight slot? Would I still be in a competitive age range?

Used to be you had to be winged by either 26 1/2 or 27 1/2 .....with waivers I think to 30 for the guard..... but im just trying to recall OLD memories....im sure someone will chime in with the right gouge.

Why bother with the regional.....why not go right to flight school, assuming you can get a slot?

The maximum age right now is 30, that's not to say there aren't waivers available but you have plenty of time. There was a dude in my class who was 32. I agree with HercDriver130, I'd just apply right now unless you just want to work until you go to UPT. If you're thinking about active duty I'd definitely look into how long the airline requires you to work if you get hired. I'm definitely no expert on this matter but I've heard of some airlines requiring you to work for a specified period or pay back the airline for your training. Realize too that military flying is vastly different than airline flying so the experience you get as a Regional pilot will help you in areas such as Instrument flying, but you'll be on the same level as everyone else in most other areas.

If you are applying to guard units I would apply now anyways. Its gonna take that long for them to send you to AMS and UPT anyways. That way you can build senority at the regional and when you get back from UPT you will actually be making some money.

I agree with TankerBob. If the guard is your goal, take the airline job, if you haven't even applied yet you will have plenty of time to work there and get experience before going to AMS/UPT. I was accepted for a guard slot last year for fiscal year 08, I thought about not taking my current job at a regional thinking I would be going to AMS this fall. Then things change and my slot is for 09 now due to manning issues. The point is the guard process can be long from acceptance to AMS/UPT in a lot of cases, and now I am very happy to have my job. Take the regional job and start applying to guard units as soon as possible to make sure you have no age issues. Then once you do go to UPT, you will have your seniority number while you are at training. Good luck with it!
