ATP written...
 

Is there any benefit to getting the the full ATP practical/flying rating as opposed to the ATP written if you've already got a muli-comm-instrument rating? The reason I ask is that most airlines' hiring minimums seem to say that either one is OK.

BTW - I just finished using sheppardair's study guide for the ATP written...it's right on the money.

The reason for getting the FULL ATP is that some majors won't let you even put an application in without. CAL and DAL just need the written. If you know you want to work for one of theses, then I would be happy with the written. I just have the written and I have a CAL interview next week.

I'd give two reasons:
1) ATP written is good for just two years -- then you have to take it again. ATP--w/type or w/o--is good forever.

2) Look who you are going to be competing against for a job. You don't want to give an airline a reason to pass on giving you an interview. Having an ATP takes one reason away.

It could be considered penny wise and $ foolish to not go for the rating vs. the written, as mentioned above. It could be considered like studying a dance but not getting out on the floor- and it's ladies night. Like taking the class and blowing off the finals- there are times to take the min run "C" instead of the full course and the "A"- now probably isn't one of 'em.

You might be able to get a percentage paid off if you are not an academy grad and if you have VA bennies available- if you're getting ready to separate you'll hopefully already know about it.

If you're out of CHS some before you this year have had good success w/ the Birmingham, AL twin engine ATP folks.

Why not throw in the 73 type and get it all done at once. Another option for mil guys who have separated is state money, I didn't use it but know a couple who had help from their states unemployment funds i.e. I'm a pilot - what will help you get a job - an atp and type rating - ok here's a couple of grand for that it seemed to be a pretty good deal but took some leg work on their end to find it.

Get the ATP rating. It will look great on the app. I did the weekend crash course in a Seminole in Jax. Either do that or get your 737 type if you want to push for Southwest. The GI bill can pay for a good chunk if available. Good luck.

I got nervous about the UPS window and submitted my App without the ATP rating (even though I'm flying it next weekend.) Hopefully having over 4500 hours will negate its absence.

As has been discussed on another forum, UPS doesn't allow upgrades to your application once submitted, so I guess I took a big gamble. I didn't want to show up late to the dance-- even if only by two weeks.

We'll see what happens... Opinions? Am I a dummy?

Damn that ROTC scholarship, no VA paying 75%. So, how do I go about getting Uncle Sam to cover costs? I'm inactive from flying due to getting passed over for Lt Col and not having "retainability" anymore.
