I want to become a USAF pilot.(MODS PLEASE DELETE)
I am 18 right now and I want to be a pilot for the USAF as the tittle states. I just graduated from HS and was supposed to go to the University of Illinois at Urbana for a degree in aviation. I had no money so I had to cancel my admission and since then I been in a limbo like state. I will be able to go next year and was wondering what can I do between now and then to start my career as an aviator?
|
The no money thing is going to hurt you. Enlist in the Air Force in the flying career field. Get your degree and apply for Officer Training School. If you don't get your degree, apply to ROTC or USAFA.
You desire something that will require a lot of time and commitment. You can't fly in the AF unless you are an officer. You can't be an officer unless you have a four year degree. Ask yourself how you plan on getting your degree. If you have the grades, apply for ROTC or USAFA and try to get a full ride. Good luck. I hope you get what you want. |

go to your loacal JC. Get some of the GE classes out of the way. Get a job start saving and try to build your credit. They you can apply for loans. You could also try filling out the FASFA. It is a goverenment form that could help you get government loans, and money.

Again my "circumstances" do allow to work, apply for FASFA or take out any loans. I am currently trying to get into the stock to make money and next semester I will go to JC to get my GE's out the way. |

My guess is that if you are currently disqualified from even enlisting in the military, your chances of ever becoming an officer and getting a pilot slot are very low. |
I really don't want to pry in to your personal life but I am baffled at what could be keeping you from going to college, getting financial aid, or enlisting in the military.
As a side note, I wouldn't recomend enlisting in the Air Force just to get money for college unless you really have to. It may not seem like it but a four year contract is a long time, and it drags on and on and on if you don't want to be doing what you're doing. Make sure that you are joining the military for the right reasons, don't just do it because its cool. *Edit - What Rick said. |

Unfair circumstances? The US armed forces are about as fair as it gets...

No, they do not disqualify in the future. It's not like I committed a crime or anything like that. I am just looking for a way to get associated with the aviation world and learn the lingo and such. |

Without money that can be a challenge. But you could try and do what I did when I was broke and awaiting my flight training. I saved up enough money to take my first lesson and found a good pilot's association at the local airport to become a part of. The instructor was sensitive to my situation and whole heartedly encourage my efforts. He would let me sit in on other people's ground lessons, "Sandbag" on their flights as an observer (With their consent of course), and even gave me some free flight time all in exchange for some elbow grease. I helped out around the Association's office, and spent quite a bit of time scrubbing down their planes. All in all it was a steal. On my weekends I got to sit around and listen to experienced pilots talk about aviation, take free flights, and I got to know every nook and cranny of Cessna 152's, 172's, and 172RG's.
Wow sounds really cool and something I been wanted to do for while but none the less I am being held down. Ultimately I want to fly for the AF so I would need to got to college. I can try to do what you did and go to a Junior College but I would hate my life. I would rather go to the college of my choice and learn to fly there. |
Well, I guess you are just S.O.L. then. Based off your short replies and limited info, I make the following assumptions:
1. You're screwing around and are trying to stir the pot. Therefore, you are not worth the time and will be ignored 2. You are screwing around because what the heck does an 18 year old know about the government? 3. Just want to get into aviation and learn the lingo and such? WTFO? Let me guess, your name is Achmed and the gubbamint is holding you down because you are Middle Eastern. You can't say anything because you might get into trouble?? Give me a break. Nice try with the 9/11 reference. Next thing is that you will ask for flying lessons but you don't need to learn how to land or take-off. Just leave this website. Hey Mods...delete this thread and this guy's account. |

In hindsight I probably should have not made it a big deal but I had trouble with this on other forums. Lets just leave it at that. LMAO Nothing can be further from the truth. I guess I can see why you would think that this is a joke but it's not. I seriously just want to become a pilot nothing else. On a serious note I will never even think about disrespecting the people that died in 9/11. |
Speaka da engrish?
1.) Are you a United States Citizen?
1.a.) If so, you might want to learn to speak English 'gooder' so you don't fail the AFOQT. Who/What is holding you down? The Man? |

I get a lot of typos when I try to type fast and I haven't been in school for a while so yes my English is getting ****ty; give me a break man. Edit: Went back and fixed most of the mistakes I made. U still mad? |
I am lost. Didn't see any 9/11 reference, I am assuming you deleted it in an edit. So my question is, what will change between now and a few years from now that will let you get money, join the military, etc.?
|
It's not a citizenship issue, You can still join the military as a non-U.S citizen.
|
I'm lost, you're asking for advice but not listing the conditions that require it? Why are you in a bind?
In today's climate when you can enlist with felony drug charges, I'm lost as to what will prevent you from enlisting now, but won't in a year, and yet you can't talk about it. And by the way you refuse to answer anyting I actually think you're full of sh!t. |
Well I see it was a big mistake asking for help. For the people that actually tried to help me I thank you. I didn't want to tell people what it was because it was personal and did not think it was a big deal.
FlyArmy I never referenced or hinted anything about 9/11 I have no idea how people came to that conclusion. Mods please delete this thread. |
I'd like to try to help but given such little information there is really not much I can do...sorry bud.

I understand. I have a question though. In the future will I be able to send private messages? |

Catscan,
I think you should get a job and start flight lessons on the side. Having all of these excueses will get you no where and if you give the military excuses your not going to make it. I know it may be difficult for you to work, save and pay for flying lessons, but when there is a will there is a way. I have many buddies that put themselves through school and are now flying fighters in the AF, Navy, and Marines. If they found a way to do it I am sure you can too. So get off your ass, get a job and start saving for school. If you can afford it then start flying too. As Nike says, Just do it. |
Thanks everyone for offering goodwill and trying to help this guy - enough with the "lets play 20 questions and see if you can guess what I need".
