Lots of assumptions here about the JAG, I have to ask Vagabond if he even wants to practice law in the military?

I know of a NYC dentist who is a Sgt in the Marine Corps. He is a machine gunner. Every drill they kept offering him to convert to Navy Officer to be a dentist and he finally said something to the effect of "I'm a dentist all week, this is my time to be a Marine. I'm here to shoot a machine gun, not work on teeth, so stop asking me." Here's a guy making a 6 figure income and he's proud and content to man a machine gun on the weekends.

My advice: If you want to serve, even late in life, then serve. Pick something you will have fun with and enjoy, and don't limit your options by your day job.

Apparently, lots of lawyers and judges are members, and they go to Japan and other exotic locales; however, he did not say what they do while over there.

As it turns out, it is something I have thought of, but doubt any branch of the military will want an annoying old bag like me. The Air Force is out since I can't fly straight. The Navy is out because I can't swim. I am in ok shape, but don't think I can survive basic training (not even sure what all that entails). I have poor eyesight, dislike guns, and worst of all, don't take commands from someone else very well. I'm used to giving commands, not taking them. :)

Can anyone please elaborate what joining the Reserves will involve? Is it a waste of my time to pursue? Should I go talk with a recruiter? There is a recruiting office near the local mall. Maybe I can stop there tomorrow.

Vagabond. As I am not a very good bull**** artist, I will put it to you straight. As you are surely a good lawyer, use your decision making skills to make this decision. You don't like guns, and don't take commands well. As all of the armed services are tasked with imposing our "will" on the enemy, I ask that you not even consider this option. We don't need people in the military that are not dedicated to the overall force. Even our Chaplains, although they do not fight, understand they are there to help us fight better and with more conviction. We certainly don't need a JAG who disagrees with what we do in the military. It's ok not to like to fight. Just don't join the military.

Well then, my apologies, and I do say with some certaintly she won't find herself as a machine gunner (particularly if she doesn't even like guns), although that has nothing to do with my point. Like to cook? I bet the Navy has room for a culinary specialist... ;)
